Gorloks Start Florida Trip W/3-1 Win Over Wheaton

The Webster University baseball team started its seven-game spring break schedule with a 3-1 win over Wheaton College (MA), on March 11 in Auburndale, FL, at the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational.  Josh Fleming had a stellar complete game effort on the mound and Kyle Uhrich's bat came alive in the Gorloks' win.

Fleming (JR, Columbia, IL/Columbia) went all nine innings, allowing just four hits, one walk, and a run, while fanning 11 batters.  It was the fifth time Fleming has reached double figures in strikeouts in his three seasons, while picking up his first win of the year.

Uhrich (SR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves), who came into the contest batting .178 with no home runs and two RBIs, beefed up the totals with a 3-4 performance, hitting his first round-tripper of the year, and picking up all Webster three RBIs.  Uhrich ended the day at a .250 clip.

After Fleming gave up his lone tally in the third, the Gorloks tied it up with an unearned run in the fourth.  Brandon Smith (SR, Imperial, MO/Seckman), getting a start in right, reached on an error and stole second.  Uhrich singled him home to make it a 1-1 game.

Uhrich hit a solo shot over the left field fence to lead off the seventh inning to make it a 2-1 contest.  Webster would add an insurance run in the ninth when Conner Wardlaw (JR, Arnold, MO/Jefferson College) opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball.  After Smith sacrificed him over to third, Uhrich drove Wardlaw home with a single up the middle for the 3-1 final.  Wardlaw would have the only other two Gorlok hits on the afternoon, finishing 2-4 with a run scored.

Fleming struck out the Lyons side in the ninth to nail down the win.  Wheaton threatened two other times in the game.  The Lyons had a two-out triple in the third that Fleming stranded with his third strikeout of the inning.  Wheaton also had a lead off single in the eighth, who took second on a throwing error and was sacrificed to third with one out.  But Fleming got the next two batters on a foul ball pop out and a fly out to left.

Webster is now 6-2 on the season.  The Gorloks continue play in Florida with a game vs. Cornell College (IA) on March 12, then play Marietta College (OH) on March 13.  Marietta is ranked 18th in the latest d3baseball.com/NCBWA top 25 poll.
