The Webster University baseball team lost to #18 Marietta College (OH), 3-1, on March 13 at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, FL. Two third-inning runs gave the Pioneers an early lead as the Gorloks were unable to rebound.
Marietta drew first blood in the bottom of the first on a single, stolen base, and run-scoring single. Webster tied it up in the top of the second. Jake Milosch (SO, St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East) doubled and took third on a single by Ben Dinter (JR, Gurnee, IL/College of Lake County). Milosch scored on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Naliwajko (JR, Mt. Prospect, IL.St. Viator) to make it a 1-1 game.
The Pioneers took the lead with two runs off Gorlok starter Matt Goro (SR, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) in the third. A double and single, aided by two Webster errors and a wild pitch, led to the two runs and the Gorloks trailed, 3-1.
The Gorloks had one last hope when Joe Swanson (FR, Park Ridge, IL/Maine West) and Nate Tholl (SO, Tinley Ridge, IL/John A Logan CC) singled with two out in the ninth, but a ground out ended Webster's comeback hopes.
Goro wound up going seven innings, giving up twelve hits, walking none, and giving up three runs, two earned. He struck out six in the game as he fell to 2-1 on the year. The earned runs were the first allowed by Goro in 21 innings this season. Brandon Smith (JR, Imperial, MO/Seckman) threw the eighth, setting the Pioneers down in order.
Milosch was 2-4 with a double and run scored on the afternoon.
Webster is 7-3 on the season. Marietta College is now 3-2. The Gorloks play the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on March 14 back in Auburndale, FL.
