Webster Ends Florida Trip W/3-0 Loss To St. Scholastica

The Webster University baseball team lost its final game of the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational to the College of St. Scholastica, 3-0, on March 18 in Auburndale, FL.  The Gorloks ran into a stellar pitching performance by the Saints starter as they wind up 3-4 against a competitive field that included numerous ranked teams and 2016 NCAA III Championships participants.

Webster had a solid starting performance of its own by Matt Goro (SR, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette), who had thrown seven scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the eighth.  Goro had given up just three hits entering the eighth when a lead off double and back to back singles scored the first run of the contest for St. Scholastica.

After striking out the next batter, Goro gave up another hit for a run and Kyle Uhrich (SR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves) relieved him.  Uhrich struck out the first batter he faced looking and the Gorloks picked off a runner at second to end the threat, down 2-0.

The Saints would add a run in the ninth when their lead off batter reached first on a wild pitch by Uhrich on strike three.  Matt Mulhearn (FR, Chicago Heights, IL/Marion Catholic) relieved and gave up a run-scoring single, then retired the next three batters.

Conner Wardlaw (JR, Arnold, MO/Jefferson College) had the lone hit for Webster, a lead off double in the seventh inning.  Up to that point, the first 18 Gorlok batters had been retired.  Uhrich received an intentional walk two batters later for Webster's only other base runner in the game.

Goro went 7 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and two runs, walking none and striking out eight.  He is 2-2 on the season.

Webster, ranked 18th in the latest ABCA national NCAA III poll, is 8-6 overall.  St. Scholastica, a member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, was 32-11 in 2016 and advanced to the NCAA III Championships.  They are now 5-5 on the season.

The Gorloks have a week off before opening play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on March 25 as they host Greenville College for a doubleheader at GCS Ballpark.
