Softball Lose Final Two At Mizuno Tournament

The Webster University softball team lost its final two games in the Mizuno Tournament, losing 3-1 to Wartburg College (IA) and 11-1 (5 inn) to host Washington University, on March 26 in Clayton, MO.  A late rally by Wartburg doomed the Gorloks in the opener and a big first inning rally by Washington U did the same in game two.

Kate Sullens (SR, Highland, IL/Highland) led off the Wartburg contest with a home run over the right field fence.  Katelyn Johnson (SR, Cambridge, IL/Woodstock) almost repeated the feat with a drive off the top of the right center field wall, settling for a double.  She was stranded as Sullens' was the lone run through the fifth inning in the contest.

Chelsea Thornley (JR, Clinton, MO/Clinton) who had only allowed three hits over the first five innings, gave up a pair of singles to start the sixth.  A home run with one down gave Wartburg a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh.

In the seventh, Emily Kolisch (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) reached on an error with one down and Sullens walked.  A ground out advanced them to second and third, but they were stranded there as Webster fell, 3-1.

Thornley went six innings, giving up six hits, walking none, and giving up three earned runs.  She is now 6-2 on the season.  Sullens was 1-3 with the home run and RBI.

Against Washington University, the Gorloks fell into a 8-0 hole in the top of the first inning.  The Bears had their first five batters reach on three hits and two errors.  After getting one out, Webster starter Morgan Mansur (JR, Decatur, IL/Mt. Zion) gave up another single and a walk.  Retiring another batter, two more Gorlok errors help keep the Bear rally alive.  When the dust settled, Washington U led 8-0, with seven of the runs unearned.

Taylor White (FR, St. Charles, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) led off the bottom of the inning with a single for Webster and took second on a ground out.  She would score on a single by Abby Burroughts (FR, Edwardsville, IL/Triad) with two down to make it 8-1.

The Bears scored three more in the fourth, with another Gorlok error figuring into the scoring, to take an 11-1 lead.  The game ended on the eight-run rule after five innings.  Burroughs was 2-2 with an RBI and White was 2-2 with a run scored in the game.

Mansur took the loss, falling to 5-2.  She went five innings, gave up 10 hits and 11 runs...only three of them earned.

Webster is now 12-7 overall on the season.  Wartburg is 11-5 and Washington U is 11-4.  The Gorloks are back home on March 29 as they host Eureka College at Blackburn Park for their first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games of the season.
