Softball Drops Twin Bill At Westminster

The Webster University softball team lost a double header at Westminster College, 6-0 and 15-7 (6 inn), on April 15 in Fulton, MO.  The Gorloks ran into a hot pitcher in game one and lost a slugfest to the Blue Jays in game two.

The Gorloks were held to just one hit in the game one, 6-0, loss as Kate Sullens (SR, HIghland, IL/Highland) singled and Terri Dearth (JR, Lemont, IL/Mt. Assisi Academy) walked for Webster's only other runner in the contest.  Webster was down 2-0 after five, but a four-run sixth inning by the Blue Jays dashed any hopes of a Gorlok comeback.

Webster starter Morgan Mansur (JR, Decatur, IL/Mt. Zion) went 5 1/3 innings, giving up nine hits, a walk, and five runs.  She falls to 8-3 on the season with the loss.

Alexis Spriggs (SR, Scott City, MO/Scott City) started game two for Webster but lasted only four batters.  After a walk, single, hit by pitch, and another single gave Westminster a 1-0 lead, Chelsea Thornley (JR, Clinton, MO/Clinton) was summoned from the bullpen.  Thornley was greeted with a pair of singles as three more runs crossed the plate for the Blue Jays.

Further damage was averted when the next batter singled also, but Emily Kolisch (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) threw out the runner trying to score at the plate.  Catcher Chyanne Fulmer (SO, DeSoto, IL/Carbondale) threw out a runner trying to steal third and Thornley coaxed a fly to center for the final out and Westminster in the lead, 4-0.

Westminster built up a 9-0 lead with five more runs in the third.  Webster got on the board in the fourth when Sullens singled and, with two down, Kayla Day (Caruthers, CA/Caruthers) blasted her fifth home run of the season to make it 9-2.

A four-run fifth inning put the Gorloks within striking distance.  Sidney Coleman (SR, Fredericksburg, VA/Fountain-Ft. Carson) reached on an error and Fulmer reached on a fielder's choice, with pinch-runner Dearth taking second.  Sullens walked to load the bases.  Katelyn Johnson (SR, Cambridge, IL/Woodstock) also reached on a fielder's choice as Dearth scored, and an error on the second baseman sent Taylor White (FR, St. Charles, MO/Lutheran St. Charles), who was pinch-running for Fulmer, home as well.

Abby Burroughs (FR, Edwardsville, IL/Triad) had an infield single, with Sullens scoring, and Burroughs and Johnson winding up at second and third.  Day had a sac fly to left, sending Johnson home and Kolisch followed with a single to score Burroughs.  When the dust settled, it was 9-7 and the Gorloks only trailed by two.

But the Blue Jays scored three more in the sixth to make it 12-7 and when they added three more in the sixth, the game ended on the eight run rule with Westminster leading, 15-7.

Day was 1-2 with a home run and three RBIs, and Kolisch was 2-3 with an RBI.  Burroughs was 1-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Johnson was 0-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Spriggs took the loss and is 6-5 on the year.

Webster is 9-5 in the SLIAC and 21-12 overall.  Westminster improves 10-2 and 17-11 overall.

The Gorloks host Fontbonne University for a double header on April 19 at Blackburn Park.
