Baseball Streak At Nine With Sweep Over Jays

The Webster University baseball team won a double header over Westminster College, 11-3 and 4-1, on April 28 at Fulton, MO.  The Gorloks played long ball in the opener and scored three runs late in the nightcap to complete the sweep.  Webster, ranked fourth in the latest NCAA III Central Region poll, won its ninth straight game.

In game one, Webster starter Josh Fleming (JR, Columbia, IL/Columbia) had a rare hiccup, giving up a first inning solo home run as Westminster took a 1-0 lead.  Webster flexed its muscles in the second, third, and fourth innings as it built an 11-1 lead.

Ben Dinter (JR, Gurnee, IL/College of Lake County) singled and stole second, took third on a ground out, and Dakota DeFreitas (JR, Brechin, Ontario/John Wood CC) singled him home.  Adam Naliwajko (SR, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator) followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence to make it a 3-1 Webster lead.  It was Naliwajko's first home run of the season.

Eric Outlaw (FR, Park Ridge, IL/Maine West) led off the third inning with a solo home run over the right field fence to make it 4-1.  It was his third round-tripper of the season.  Kyle Uhrich (SR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves) singled and Matt Wollnik (SR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley) reached on an error, with Uhrich taking third and Wollnik second.

Dinter hit a sacrifice fly to score Uhrich, as Wollnik took third.  A Mike Wick (JR, Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) sac fly scored Wollnik.  DeFreitas launched the Gorloks third run of the game...his third of the year...and Webster led, 7-1.  In the fourth, Outlaw hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot with one down.  Uhrich and Wollnik both singled and Dinter drilled a three-run homer, the Gorloks' fifth of the contest, to extend the lead to 11-1.

Fleming was touched for two more runs, one unearned, in the fifth.  He went all seven innings, giving up six hits and one walk, while striking out eight.  Fleming is now 6-0, with a 0.66 earned run average.

Outlaw was 2-4, with two home runs, two RBIs, and two runs scored.  Dinter was 2-4 with a home run, four RBIs, two runs, and a stolen base.  DeFreitas and Naliwajko were 1-4, with a home run and two RBIs.

In game two, The Gorloks had eight hits entering the seventh but no runs to show for them but a Wick solo home run, Webster's sixth of the afternoon, gave them a 1-0 lead.

Uhrich started for Webster and had a no-hitter through six innings, while racking up 13 strikeouts, before the Blue Jays reached him for a single to lead off the seventh.  After a stolen base, Westminster scored on a two-out single to tie it up at 1-1.

Webster regained the lead in the eighth when Outlaw singled and Uhrich walked, with both runners moving up on a passed ball.  Wollnik hit a sacrifice fly to score Outlaw and, with two down, DeFreitas doubled in Uhrich.  The Gorloks added another insurance run in the ninth.  Kyler Kent (FR, Pottsboro, TX/Pottsboro) led off with a single, and pinch-runner C.J. Lee (JR, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) made it all the way to third on a sac bunt by Naliwajko.  He would score on a sacrifice fly by Conner Wardlaw (JR, Arnold, MO/Jefferson College) to make it 4-1.

Uhrich threw a complete game, going nine innings and giving up just two hits and four walks, and a run. He wound up with 16 strikeouts, tying Brandon Smith (SR, Imperial, MO/Seckman) for the most in a single game, while Smith's came in seven innings pitched.  Uhrich is 6-1 on the year and has 73 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings pitched.

Wick was 2-4 with a home run, RBI, and run scored.  Wardlaw was 2-4 with an RBI, and DeFreitas was 2-4 with a double and an RBI.

Webster is 16-2 in the SLIAC and in first place in the West Division.  The Gorloks are 26-9 overall with the nine-game win streak.  Westminster fell to 11-7 and 16-10.

The Gorloks complete the series with the Blue Jays with a single game at GCS Ballpark on April 30.
