Kyle Uhrich had a walk off game-winning hit with no one down in the ninth as the Webster University baseball team defeated Iowa Wesleyan University, 4-3, on April 8 at GCS Ballpark. In a rare feat, Uhrich (SR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves) made himself a winner on the mound with the walk-off.
The Gorloks found themselves in a 2-0 hole in the first. Brandon Smith (JR, Imperial, MO/Seckman), getting his first start, gave up a lead off solo home run. An infield hit, sac bunt, and single to center made it 2-0. The Tigers put up a third run in the fourth. A lead off double, hit by pitch, and two out single gave Wesleyan a 3-0 lead.
Smith went 5 2/3 innings, striking out nine and giving up five hits and allowing the three runs. Matt Mulhearn (FR, Chicago Heights, IL/Marion Catholic) got the last out in the sixth, and Johnny Lord (SR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley) took over for Mulhearn in the seventh after he walked two. Lord retired the final two batters to avert any damage and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings till Uhrich took over in the ninth.
Webster got on the board in the sixth. Ben Dinter (JR, Gurnee, IL/College of Lake County) singled, Uhrich walked, and Jacob Budrovich (SO, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) hit by pitch loaded the bases. Eric Outlaw (FR, Park Ridge, IL/Maine West) singled in a run and a Joe Swanson (FR, Park Ridge, IL/Maine West) ground out plated the Gorloks's second run to make it a 3-2 game.
The Gorloks tied the game in the eighth. Matt Wollnik (SR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley) doubled, and a single to center by Adam Naliwajko (JR, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator) sent Wollnik to third. Wollnik was thrown out at home on an attempted double steal, as Naliwajko took second, but a Zach Bishop (JR, Marshall, MO/Marshall) scored Naliwajko to tie it at 3-3.
The Tigers had runners at the corners with one out in the ninth, but Uhrich, relieving Lord, struck out both batters he faced to end the threat. Lord went 2 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and no runs.
Dinter led of the bottom of the ninth with a single. Uhrich followed with a fly ball over the center fielder's head that scored Dinter from first for the game-winner. Uhrich's 2/3 of an inning, with two strikeouts, earned him the win and he is 3-0 on the season.
Uhrich was 1-2, with an RBI, two walks, stolen base, and run scored. Dinter was 1-2 with an RBI and two runs scored and a walk. Wollnik was 2-4 with a double.
The Gorloks complete the series vs. the Tigers with a double header at GCS Ballpark on April 9.
