Softball Makes Its 7 Straight With Eureka Sweep

The Webster University softball team made it seven straight wins, sweeping Eureka College (IL), 6-4 & 12-8, in a double header on April 9 at Blackburn Park.  The Gorloks are now 7-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after their four wins at home over the weekend.

In game one, Webster was tied with the Red Devils, 1-1, after two innings but a five-run third inning propelled the Gorloks to victory.  Chyanne Fulmer (SO, DeSoto, IL/Carbonndale) reached on an error to start the inning, Kate Sullens (SR, Highland, IL/Highland) walked, and Katelyn Johnson (SR, Cambridge, IL/Woodstock) singled to load the bases.

Abby Burroughs (FR, Edwardsville, IL/Triad) hit into a force at second, scoring one, and Kayla Day (SR, Caruthers, CA/Caruthers) singled to make it 3-1.  Katlyn Garza (JR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North) followed with a three-run jolt over the left field fence to make it 6-1.  It was Garza's fourth round-tripper of the season

Morgan Mansur (JR, Decatur, IL/Mt. Zion) got the start in game one, going six innings and giving up six hits, four walks, and three earned runs.  She struck out three while improving to 7-2 on the season.  Chelsea Thornley (JR, Clinton, MO/Clinton) pitched a scoreless seventh, picking up the Gorloks' first save on the year.

Garza was 1-3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Day was 2-2 with two RBIs and a run.  Johnson was 2-2 with a double, walk, and run scored.

The Red Devils jumped on Webster game two starter Alexis Spriggs (SR, Scott City, MO/Scott City) for three runs in the first.  But Webster came back to score two in its half of the inning.  Sullens singled, Johnson was hit by a pitch, and Burroughs singled to load the bases.  Day singled, scoring Sullens, but Johnson was thrown out at the plate.  Terri Dearth (JR, Lemont, IL/Mt. Assisi Academy) walked to load them back up, and Emily Kolisch (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) singled in Burroughs to make it 3-2.

Webster took the lead in the second.  Sullens doubled and Johnson singled her home.  Burroughs doubled with Johnson taking third, and Day singled home Johnson.  Dearth hit a sac fly to score Burroughs and Webster lead, 5-3.  The Gorloks added two more in the third with Karissa Cardenas (SR, Henderson, CO/Prairie View) singling, and Sullens and Johnson both receiving walks to start the inning.  Burroughs walked in Cardenas, and Day hit a sac fly to score Sullens to make it 7-3.

The Red Devils trimmed the Gorlok lead to two in the fifth.  Eureka took advantage of two Webster errors to score two unearned runs to close to 7-5.

Johnson led off with a triple in the Webster fifth and Burroughs singled her home.  With two out, Kolisch doubled home Austin Peterson (FR, Lake Ozark, MO/School of the Osage), pinch-running for Day, who had reached on a fielder's choice.  Garza walked and Sidney Coleman (SR, Fredericksburg, VA/Fountain-Ft. Carson) and Cardenas each had run scoring singles to make it a 11-5 lead.

Spriggs gave way to Thornley in the sixth.  Thornley got nicked for three runs in the inning.  A single, double, and two walks, with the help of a Gorlok error, helped Eureka close to within three, at 11-8.  Burroughs got one of those back for Webster with her sixth home run, to dead center field, to lead off the Webster sixth.

After Thornley allowed the lead off hitter to reach in the seventh, Spriggs was summoned back to the mound from the 'flex' position.  She gave up a single, but got the final three outs for the 12-8 win.  Spriggs went a total of six innings, giving up six hits, three walks, and three earned runs.  Spriggs picked up her fifth win as she improved to 5-3 on the year.

Burroughs was 4-4 with a home run, double, three RBIs and three runs scored.  Day was 2-4 with three RBIs, and Johnson was 2-3 with a triple, RBI, two runs scored and a walk.  Sullens was 2-4 with a double, walk, and three runs scored, and Kolisch was 2-4 with with a double, two RBIs, a walk, and run scored.

Webster is now 7-1 in the SLIAC and 19-8 overall.  Eureka falls to 3-5 in the SLIAC and 10-10 overall.

The Gorloks host Blackburn College (IL) for a double header on April 12 at Blackburn Park, and Greenville College (IL) on April 14.  April 14 is Senior Day, when the Gorlok seniors will be recognized.
