The Webster University volleyball team won its 10th straight match, its longest streak since 2007, winning at Eureka College (IL), 3-1, on September 26. The Gorloks are 9-0 in first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the win.
Webster won
set one, 25-20, as the Gorloks recorded 10 kills but also had eight attack errors as the Red Devils battled. The Gorloks picked it up on offense in a 25-16
set two win. Webster had 14 kills at a .175 attack pct.
Eureka continued to battle on its home floor, cutting Webster's lead to 2-1 with a 25-22
set three win. But the Gorloks ralled in
set four to defeat the Red Devils, 25-19, and took the match, 3-1.
Webster would finish with one solo and 14 block assists at the net in the match. Eureka did a better job at the net than some of the teams the Gorloks have faced recently, finishing with five solo and 10 block assists in the loss.
Torie Grassi (JR, St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) led the Gorlok offense with 14 kills while hitting at a .333 pct. Rachel Mencel (SR, Colchester, IL/West Prairie) followed with eight kills, hitting at a .238 clip. Webster as a team hit .135 on the evening, below their season average of .170 on the season entering the match.
Kelsey Hamann (JR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) had a team-high 21 assists, pitching in with 10 digs. Maria Soffner (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) had a team-high 14 digs. Senior Ashley Robinson (Bloomington, IL/Bloomington) finished the night with 10 assists and 10 digs, while Kristen Farrah (FR, St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) had 14 digs and four kills.
The Gorloks tied the 10-match win streak it had in 2007, as the third longest in program history. Webster's longest win streak is 13 in 1997, and the second longest came in 1994 when the Gorloks won 12 in a row as they finished 20-5.
Webster is 10-3 oveall and 9-0 in the SLIAC as it holds down first place. Eureka is now 3-4 in the SLIAC and 3-8 overall. Webster has never lost to Eureka in volleyball, going 22-0 since 2006
The Gorloks continue play with a match vs. Greenville College on September 28 at Grant Gymnasium. Webster bested the Panthers in a showdown match at Greenville last week, 3-0.
