The Webster University volleyball team rebounded nicely after its first conference loss with a sweep of MacMurray College, 3-0, and host Blackburn College, 3-0, on September 30 in Carlinville, IL. The Gorloks continue their hold on first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 11-1 conference record.
In the day's opening match, Webster handled the Highlanders, 25-16, in the first set but had to battle to a 27-25 set two win, before closing out the match, 25-22 in the third. Torie Grassi (JR, St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kainhad nine kills in the match, with Kristen Farrah (FR, St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) pitching in with seven. Grassis had three block assists. Maria Soffner (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) and Farrah each had 14 digs to lead Webster.
Against Blackburn, Webster had an easier time, winning in straight sets, 25-20, 25-12, and 25-11. Samantha Kruse (FR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) led with eight kills and a .333 attack pct. Farrah added another seven and Grassi had six more in the match. Farrah also had a team-high 12 digs. Jenna Rodriguez (SO, Freeburg, IL/Freeburg) had a team-high 14 assists. Soffner had four service aces and added eight digs.
Webster will host Fontbonne University on October 4 at Grant Gymnasium as the 'Battle of Big Bend' continues. The Gorloks will then play Thomas More College (KY) and host Washington University on October 6 in Clayton, MO
