Men's Soccer Records Scoreless Draw Against Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - Webster University and Greenville University battled each other for 110 minutes and two overtimes here Saturday evening to a 0-0 scoreless draw in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Francis Field.

The tie was the first of the season for both teams as Webster's record moved to 11-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the league, while Greenville is now 11-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the SLIAC. 

"It was a good game played by both teams tonight. Both of us had chances and I thought both teams played really hard," Webster head coach Mike Siener said following the match that took nearly over two-and-half hours to play. 

With the tie, Webster fell a half-game out of first place in the SLIAC standings as Spalding sits atop the league standings with a 4-0-1 mark. Spalding and Webster will face each other this coming Thursday at 7 p.m. in Fenton, Mo., at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

For the match, Greenville held an edge in both shots and shots on goal as the Gorloks allowed a season-high 29 shots and 16 shots on goal in the tie. The previous high in shots allowed was 17 by Millikin on Sept. 19, while the previous high in shots in goal of 10 came against both Millikin and Illinois Wesleyan.

The Gorloks finished with 11 shots and four shots in the goal for the match, including taking 10 of those 11 shots after halftime. 

Junior midfielder Edin Mehmedovic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) led the way with four shots and had two shots on goal, while freshman midfielder Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) added two shots in the match. 

Juan Jose Herranz led the Panthers with eight shots and five shots on goal, while Jared McPeek had six shots and three shots on goal. 

Webster sophomore goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) had a nice night in the net as he finished with a career high 14 saves in 110 minutes of action. The 14 saves is tied for third most in a match in school history.

"Matt came up with some big saves tonight," the Webster coach added. 

In the first half, Greenville had nine shots and six shots on goal, while WU's lone shot came in the eighth minute as Mehmedovic took a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Greenville goalkeeper Nick Holland. Holland recorded four saves in his 110 minutes of action Saturday.

In the 80th minute, Webster put two shots on goal that both hit the crossbar as the first shot came at 80:21 by sophomore midfielder Logan Takizawa (Holualoa, Hawaii/Konawaena) and 24 seconds later at 80:45, the second shot came from junior defender Justin Schmidt (St. Louis, Mo./Metro). 

The Panthers had three shots to win the match in the final two-plus minutes of regulation but one of the shot was high and the other two were saved by Amick, including a save on a shot by Herranz with two seconds left. 

In the first overtime period, Greenville took three shots and held Webster without a shot. 

Greenville then came out firing in the second overtime period as they took three shots in the opening two minutes of hte period and then added a header in the 104th minutes that was saved by Amick.

WU, who went nearly 14-plus minutes without a shot in the two overtime periods, finally took a shot in the 104th minute, but Kohler's shot from the top of the box was wide. 

In the final minute of the double overtime, freshman midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood) had a shot on goal that was saved by Holland to keep the match scoreless.
