Men's Soccer Wins Second Straight, Shuts Out Iowa Wesleyan on Road

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - Webster University extended its win streak to two consecutive matches here Tuesday as the Gorloks posted a 2-0 shutout victory over Iowa Wesleyan University in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer action at East Lake Park.

With the win, Webster improves to 13-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the SLIAC, while Iowa Wesleyan improved to 6-11-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the league.

The victory also kept Webster's hopes to claim one of the four spots in next week's SLIAC Tournament alive as the Gorloks are currently second in the league standings with two regular season matches left as Webster hosts Fontbonne on Saturday and then plays on Monday at Principia in a match that was postponed due to weather on Oct. 6.

In Tuesday's win, Webster was outshot, 20-16, but turned two of those 16 shots into goals as Webster posted its 14th shutout of the season, including its sixth shutout in seven SLIAC matches this season.

Webster, who received votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Central Region rankings, got the scoring started in the 13th minute as senior forward Tucker Hively (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) scored an unassisted goal to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead. Hively's goal was his third of the season.

Freshman midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood) made its 2-0 in the 30th minute as he scored off a free kick from a pass by freshman midfielder Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo.).

From that point, Webster turned the game over to its defense as the Gorloks would hold the Tigers out without a goal over the final 59-plus minutes of the match.

In the first half, Webster was outshot, 9-7. Both teams took four shots on goal in the opening half.

IWU would then record 11 shots in the second half, but WU would allow just three of those shots to be on goal after halftime. Webster took nine shots in the second half.

Pearson and Kohler each had three shots, while sophomore midfielder Joacquin Soto (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) added two shots in the win. In addition to Pearson, Kohler and Soto, eight other Gorloks took a shot in the match.

IWU's Francisco Saldana led the Tigers with five shots, while Hugo Bonilla and Fabian Arvizu added four shots, including Arvizu taking three shots on goal in the loss.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded seven saves and posted his 11th shutout of the season to improve his record to 10-2-1 on the year.

Chris Rimmer (6-9-1) took the loss in net for the Tigers as along with allowing those two first half goals, he recorded five saves.

Webster will return home this coming Saturday, Oct. 27 as they host rival Fontbonne (7-9 overall, 4-3 SLIAC) in a 3 p.m. SLIAC match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
