Volleyball Falls to Cornell, Dominican at Illinois Wesleyan Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Webster University concluded play here Saturday at the Holiday Inn Express Classic III by falling in three sets to both Cornell College and Dominican (Ill.) University at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Gorloks, who have now lost three straight matches after having its school record long 14 match win streak snapped on Friday against Coe College, opened play on Saturday by falling in three sets to Cornell College (25-13, 25-15, 25-17) and then dropping all three sets against Dominican (25-18, 25-16, 25-17).

With the two setbacks, Webster's record fell to 18-10 overall on the season. 

For the day, Webster's offense struggled as they hit a combined .105 in the two matches as they recorded a total of 48 kills, but committed 28 attack errors. Against Cornell, the Gorloks hit .089 as they had 22 kills, including a team-high six from senior right side hitter Torie Grassi (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) and then they hit .119 and had 26 kills against Dominican. In the match against Dominican, Grassi had 10 kills and hit .360 in the loss. 

Along with Grassi's six kills against Cornell, senior outside hitter Samantha Budrovich (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) added five kills and sophomore outside hitter Samantha Kruse (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) had four kills and added 11 digs. 

Defensively against Cornell (16-8), Webster had 49 digs, but Cornell hit .324 in the win and recorded 55 digs. 

In addition to Kruse's 11 digs, sophomore libero Kristen Farrah (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) added a team-high 13 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Kyra Gensel (Clarkton, N.C./Harrells Christian) came one dig shy of matching her career high as she had seven digs. 

Junior setter Jenna Rodriguez (Smithton, Ill./Freeburg) had 10 assists and five digs, while freshman setter Ali Spohr (Quincy, Ill./Quincy) had eight assists and six digs for the Gorloks. 

Alissa McEndaffer paced Cornell with 12 kills and hit .370, while Nicole Ciari added 11 kills and hit .643 and Allison Eikenberry finished with 11 kills and hit .345. Sydney Meeker paced Central's defense with 15 digs and Taylor Axelson added 13 digs. 

Webster opened the match by recording six kills and hitting .083 and then they hit .056 in the second set as they also had six kills and then hit .118 in the third set as they recorded 10 kills. Cornell hit .448 in the first set, .333 in the second set and .216 in the third set as they had 12 or more kills in all three sets.

Meanwhile, against Dominican, Webster hit .119 as they had 26 kills, but couldn't overcome 13 aces from Dominican. 

Grassi paced the Gorloks offense against the Stars as she had 10 kills and hit .360. No other Gorlok has more than three kills against Dominican (19-9). 

Defensively, WU was outdug, 65-62, but the Gorloks held a 3-1 edge in blocks for the match. 

Farrah led the way with 19 digs for the Gorloks, while Kruse had 10 digs in the loss. Rodriguez posted her 11th double-double fo the season as she finished with 13 assists and 11 digs. Freshman right side hitter/setter Samantha Hoff (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) had a career-high eight assists and also tallied a career high seven digs. 

While Dominican had 13 aces, Webster finished with three, including two from Rodriguez. Anastasia Labadessa had seven of Dominican's 13 aces. In addition, she also had 35 assists and nine digs.

Gabija Sinickaite paced Dominican's offense with 10 kills and hit .450, while Stephanie Cole added nine kills and hit .304. 

Megan Parker paced the Stars defense with a match-high 24 digs. 

In the match, Webster hit .031 in the first set, before hitting .074 in the second set and .214 in the third set, while Dominican hit over .200 in all three matches and had 12 or more kills in all three matches.

The Gorloks will look to snap its three-match losing skid this coming Tuesday, Oct. 30 as they close out the 2018 regular season with a 7 p.m. match in Jacksonville, Ill., against Illinois College. Following Tuesday's match, Webster will return home to host the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Grant Gymnasium.
