Baseball Wins Fourth Straight, Rallies for 6-5 Win Sunday Over Ripon

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Webster University Baseball extended its win streak to four straight games here Sunday afternoon as the Gorloks rallied to post a 6-5 win over Ripon College in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park.

With the victory, Webster improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 on its spring break trip to Florida, while Ripon falls to 0-3 on the year.

In Sunday's win, the Gorloks recorded 13 hits and got a strong seven inning relief appearance from freshman righthander Jake Anderson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook). Seven of Webster's 13 hits went for extra bases (5 doubles, two triples), including a career high three doubles by senior leftfielder Ben Dinter (Gurnee, Ill./College of Lake County).

Anderson, who came into the came with two outs in the first and the Gorloks trailing 2-0, allowed nine hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out six and walking none in his seven innings of work.

Ripon opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as they used one hit and turned two errors on failed pickoff attempts by Webster freshman starting pitcher Andrew Padilla (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) to plate two runs and take an early 2-0 lead. Padilla, who made his first collegiate start, retired just two of the six batters he faced as he allowed one hit and two runs (one earned), while walking three and fanning none.

The Gorloks, who opened its seven-game Florida trip on Saturday with an 8-3 win over Rhodes College at Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Fla., used a four run third inning to take the lead a 4-2. In the inning, redshirt junior catcher Talon Parke (Mesa, Ariz./Saint Joseph's College) led off with a triple to left and would score when the next hitter, junior second baseman Danny Strohm (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) hit a double down the left field line. After a bunt moved Strohm to third, senior centerfielder Conner Wardlaw (Arnold, Mo./Jefferson College) brought home the second run on his single through the left side. Wardlaw would score the third run of the inning on an RBI triple to center by junior rightfielder Nate Tholl (Tinley Park, Ill./John A. Logan CC) and Tholl would came home on a wild pitch by Ripon hurler Brian Brown for WU's fourth run of the frame.

Ripon would pull within a run in the bottom of the fourth as they used two doubles, a bunt and a fielding error in left by Dinter. The error was one of four recorded by the Gorloks in the game.

Webster would get that run back in the fifth inning thanks to three straight singles and a groundout to push in front 5-3. The Gorloks run in the fifth was driven in by sophomore first baseman Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro).

The Gorloks lead grew to 6-3 in the sixth inning on back-to-back doubles by Dinter and freshman third baseman Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport).

Ripon would score a run in the seventh to pull within 6-4 and then used two consecutive singles and an RBI double in the eighth by Keegan Johnston to pull within 6-5. The Red Hawks, though, couldn't get any more runners to cross the plate as freshman hurler Sean Beaver (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) relieved Anderson and struck out Kyle Rogers with runners on second and third.

In the ninth, Beaver would retire Ripon in order to seal Webster's win and earn his first career collegiate save. Beaver would throw the final 1.1 innings and struck out two of the four batters he faced.

Dinter led the way offensively for Webster as he was 4-for-4 at the plate, while Swords and Parke each had two hits in the win.

Ripon, who finished with 10 hits, was paced by two hits apiece from Tyler Nelson and Josh Oswald.

Brown (0-1) took the loss for Ripon on the mound as he threw seven innings and allowed 11 hits and six runs, all of which were earned, while walking one and striking out six.

The Gorloks will continue play in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday, March 12 with a 9 a.m. EDT game against 10th-ranked Southern Maine at Lake Myrtle Park's Main Field.
