Baseball Runs Win Streak to Seven Straight, Posts 12-3 Victory Over Rutgers-Camden

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Webster University continued its hot play here Tuesday evening as the Gorloks scored six runs in the fourth inning and cruised to a 12-3 victory Rutgers University-Camden in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park.

With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to seven straight games and improves its record to 7-2 on the year, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-3 on the season. In addition, Webster is also now 4-0 on its seven game spring break trip to Florida.

For the fifth straight game, Webster's offense recorded double-digits in hits as they collected 12 hits in Tuesday's win, including six extra base hitts. The Gorloks also matched its season high in runs with 12 against the Raptors as Webster also scored 12 runs in its 12-1 win over Transylvania last Sunday.
Against the Raptors, sophomore first baseman Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the year as he was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while junior rightfielder Nate Tholl (Tinley Park, Ill./John A. Logan CC) and junior second baseman Danny Strohm (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) each had two hits in the win.

In addition to an offense that pounded out 12 hits, the Gorloks once again got another solid effort from a pitcher out its bullpen senior Austin Beccue (Red Bud, Ill./Gibault Catholic) replaced junior starter Adrian Santiago (Chicago, Ill./Oakton College) in the third inning and allowed just two hits and held the Raptors scoreless in his 4.1 innings of work to pick up the win. Beccue also didn't walk a batter and struck out three. In fact, Webster's bullpen finished the game allowing just three hits, no runs and recording five strikeouts.

Santiago tossed 2.2 innings and allowed two hits and three runs (two earned runs), while walking three and fanning two.

Rutgers-Camden scored two runs in the first inning thanks to a 2-run homer over the fence in left by John Tedeschi and added a third run, which was unearned, in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Trailing 3-0 after two innings, Webster's bats would come awake in the fourth inning as they sent nine hitters to the plate, recorded three hits and took advantage of two Raptor errors to score six runs and take a 6-3 lead. In the inning, Tholl led off by being hit by a pitch, moved to second on a single by Kent and moved to third when senior leftfielder Ben Dinter (Gurnee, Ill./College of Lake County) drew a walk to load to the bases. The next Gorlok hitter, sophomore designated hitter Mark Melville (St. Louis, Mo./NW Missouri State) delivered a 2-run single down the right field line for Webster's first two runs. Webster tied the game on a wild pitch from Drew Zytko and would take the lead with a one-out RBI single by sophomore catcher Joe Swanson (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine West). The next two Gorlok runs came home on back-to-back bunts by freshman shortstop Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augustine) and senior centerfielder Conner Wardlaw (Arnold, Mo./Jefferson College).

Webster added two runs to its lead in the sixth inning thanks to a lead-off triple by freshman third baseman Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport). Swords' triple was followed by a double by Strohm and after Strohm stole third he would score when Staker put down a bunt up the first base line that allowed Strohm to cross the plate with the eighth run of the game.

The Gorloks added four more runs in the seventh to push its lead to 12-3. In the inning, Tholl led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Kent. Kent would score the next run as the ensuing hitter, senior leftfielder Mike Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) drilled a Mike Calabrese pitch to left center for an RBI triple. The Gorloks next run came home on a fielder's choice grounder by Swords and after Swanson lined out for the second out, Strohm hit an double to left center that plated Swords for the 12th and final run of the game.

From that point, Webster freshman reliever Sean Beaver (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) would allow a lead off single in the eighth, before striking out the next three Raptors in order and Staker came in to pitch the ninth and after hitting the first batter he faced, Staker would get Brandon Cornelius to fly out and then ended the game by inducing Nolan Gerold to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. The double play was the third of the game for the Gorloks.

Rutgers-Camden had five hits and three errors in the game as Tyler Travis recorded two of his team's five hits.

Zytko (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Raptors as he pitched 3.1 inning and allowed four hits and six runs (four earned), while walking one and striking out two.

The Gorloks will take Wednesday off, before returning to action in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Thursday, March 15 with a 5 p.m. EDT game against 11th-ranked College of St. Scholastica at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.
