Women's Tennis Struggles in Setback Against College of Wooster

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -  In their third match of the week here Wednesday morning, Webster University went up against the College of Wooster Fighting Scots and the match was a rematch from last season's spring break trip as the Scots picked up a 7-2 win in that match. The Gorloks were hoping for a better performance this year, but they ultimately fell short 7-2 this year at Carolina Place.

With the setback, the Gorloks fall to 3-3 overall and 2-1 on its spring break trip, while the College of Wooster improves to 7-1 on the year.

In Wednesday's match, senior Monica Behrle (Atlanta, Ga./East Paulding) and junior Madison Watts (Rogersville, Mo./Logan Rogersville) continued their five-match spring winning streak with an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot. The tandem is now 7-2 this season, including being 5-0 in dual matches.

At the No. 2 doubles spot, senior Jesse Steffens-Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and junior Sara Rice (Mahomet, Il./Mahomet-Seymour) had a close match as they fell 8-6 to Shannon Sertz and Laura Haley, while freshman Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and Adri Ventimiglia (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette Catholic) lost 8-1 at the No. 3 doubles spot to Sarah Duran and Mali Zemedkun.

Webster entered singles play now 2-1 in the match and hoped to make up some points there as five of the six matches ended in tiebreakers, with four of those six coming in the third set.

"I was proud of our top five singles players taking their matches into tiebreaks today," Webster head coach Martha Davis-Goldstein said. "I look forward to our team coming out strong on Friday in our final match in Hilton Head."

The Gorloks only win in singles came from Steffens-Willis at the No. 3 spot. After winning the first set 6-4, she lost at 6-0 in the second set, but refocused and charged ahead in the third set tiebreaker to earn a 10-5 win.

"It was great for me to win a tiebreak," Steffens-Willis said following the match. "I'm proud of my team for working hard today. We are ready to keep fighting this season."

At the No. 1 spot, Behrle dropped her first singles match of the spring as she fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to Joy Li, while Watts lost in a third set tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot to Duran (6-0, 4-6, 10-6) and Rice also fell in third set tiebreak at the No. 4 spot to Morgan Wagers, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. The other tiebreak came at the No. 5 spot as Federhofer fell to Haley, 2-6, 6-4, 10-3.

Webster will conclude its spring break trip to Hilton Head on Friday as they face Nazareth College in a 5 p.m. EDT match at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club.
