SAUGET, Ill. - Webster University returned home here Sunday morning for the first time in three weeks and dropped a 4-1 decision to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
Sunday's game was the Gorloks first at home since earning a 12-1 win over Transylvania on March 4 and its first game overall in eight days since playing seven games in Florida at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational during spring break.
With the loss, Webster, who is ranked 14th in the latest ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll, fell to 9-4 overall, while RHIT improved to 4-11 on the year. The loss was just the second for the Gorloks in its last 10 games.
In Sunday's game, Webster has held to three singles and had just five base runners by RHIT starting pitcher Luke Buehler, who improved to 1-3 with the complete game win. In nine innings of work, Buehler didn't walk a batter and struck out five in his 104 pitch effort.
The three hits and one run were both season lows for the Gorloks.
RHIT jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning thanks a walk, a single and a ground ruled double by David Burnside off of senior righthander
C.J. Lee (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley).
The Fightin' Engineers lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth inning thanks to a 2-run homer over the wall in right by Ryan Stachowski. The homer was the first this season allowed by Lee and Stachowski's first round tripper of year.
Webster would finally score its first run of the game in the sixth on a foul popup by sophomore first baseman
Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) that RHIT catcher Connor Helbling caught right near the Gorloks dugout and his momentum from the catch took him into the dugout and out of play, which allowed senior centerfielder
Conner Wardlaw (Arnold, Mo./Jefferson College) to score from third. Wardlaw had reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a single by junior rightfielder
Nate Tholl (Tinley Park, Ill./John A. Logan CC).
RHIT would add an insurance run in the seventh thanks to two singles and a bunt to push out to a 4-1 lead.
That would all the runs Buehler would need as he would retire the Gorloks in order the final three innings to seal his first win of the season.
Lee (1-1) took the loss on the hill for the Gorloks as he pitched seven innings and allowed seven hits and four runs, while walking one and striking out a season high eight on 104 pitches.
Wardlaw, Tholl and sophomore catcher
Joe Swanson (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine West) each had hits for the Gorloks.
Cody Logan had two of RHIT's seven hits.
Webster will face Wartburg at 4 p.m. to conclude Sunday's tripleheader of baseball at GCS Credit Union Ballpark as Rose-Hulman was scheduled to face Wartburg at 1 p.m.
