FULTON, Mo. - Webster University continued its strong play in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action here Thursday afternoon by posting a 6-3 victory over Westminster College at the Robert Elder Memorial Courts on the Westminster College campus.
With the win, the Gorloks extend its win streak to three straight matches and improves its record to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the SLIAC, while Westminster falls to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
In Thursday's win, the Gorloks used strong play in singles as they won five of the six singles matches and earned the match victory by picking up a win at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Senior
Monica Behrle (Atlanta, Ga./East Paulding) and junior
Madison Watts (Rogersville, Mo./Logan Rogersville) gave the Gorloks their only points in doubles actin on Thursday as the No. 1 tandem won its eighth straight match and improved to 10-2 on the year following its 8-2 win over Westminster's No. 1 team of Clare Baldwin and Alexa McPherson.
The Blue Jays, though, would post wins by identical 8-5 scores in doubles at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to earn two of its three points in the match.
In singles action, Behrle tied the match at 2-2 thanks to her straight sets win at the No. 1 spot over Baldwin. Behrle, who has won three straight singles matches and is 12-3 in singles on the season, defeated Baldwin by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
Westminster would retake the lead in the match at 3-2 following Payton Beeler's win over Gorloks senior
Robin Bolme (Smyrna, Tenn./Blackman) at the No. 6 spot. Beeler defeated Bolme, 6-3, 6-2.
Webster would then seal the match win by winning the next four singles matches, including winning three of them in straight sets.
Senior
Jesse Steffens-Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) helped Webster tie the match following her 6-2, 6-1 win over Natalie Tiffany at the No. 3 singles spot. The win by Steffens-Willis was her fifth consecutive victory.
The Gorloks would retake the lead at 4-3 following a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 4 singles spot by junior
Sara Rice (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) and sealed the match victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles by freshman
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) over Westminster's Laural Royer. With her win, Rice improved to 7-2 on the season and posted her third straight win.
Webster's other singles win came at the No. 2 spot as Watts, who was named this week's SLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, posted a win in a third set tiebreaker over Sydney Attebery. Watts earned a 6-3 win in the first set, while Attebery won 6-4 in the second set to set up a third set tiebreaker, which Watts won 10-2 to improve her record to 6-8 on the year.
The Gorloks will look to make its four wins in a row as they return to action on Tuesday, April 3 as they host Missouri Baptist in a 6 p.m. non-conference match at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.
