Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Principia, Earns 15th Consecutive 20 Win Campaign

SAUGET, Ill. - Webster University concluded of stretch of seven games in six days here Tuesday evening by sweeping a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Principia College at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

The 22nd-ranked Gorloks opened Tuesday's doubleheader with an 8-4 win, before scoring a season high 20 runs in posting a 20-0 shutout win in the nightcap that was called in the seventh due to the 10-run mercy rule. The 20 runs in the nightcap were the most scored by the Gorloks in a game since tallying 40 runs in a 40-4 win over Eureka College on April 26, 2015.

With the two victories, Webster extends its win streak to seven straight games and moves its record to 21-7 overall and 11-2 in the SLIAC, while Principia falls to 17-11 overall and 8-6 in the SLIAC. The two wins also helped the Gorloks earn its 15th consecutive 20-win season.

In the doubleheader, Webster offense recorded 26 hits, stole 13 bases, drew 13 walks and hit four home runs, including three homers in the nightcap. The Gorloks have now scored double digit runs five times during its current seven-game winning streak.

During the current 7-game win streak, Webster is hitting .381 as as team as they have recorded 93 hits, scored 88 runs, hit 21 doubles, eight home runs and is 34-for-38 on stolen bases. In addition, Webster has drawn 37 walks and has a .574 slugging percentage.

In Tuesday's opener, Webster jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore first baseman Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) drilled an 0-2 pitch from Stephen Strong over the wall in right for his team leading four home run of the season. Kent's homer also scored junior rightfielder Nate Tholl (Tinley Park, Ill./John A. Logan CC), who reached on a one-out single to left.

The Panthers would get one of the those runs back in the top of the second on doubles by Aleq McMullin and Strong off of freshman starting pitcher Sean Beaver (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch).

Webster added three more runs in the second to push its lead to 5-1. In the second inning, junior second baseman Danny Strohm (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) led off with a single, stole second and would score on an RBI single to left by senior leftfielder Mike Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett). After Tholl lined out for the second out of the inning, senior designated hitter Ben Dinter (Gurnee, Ill./College of Lake County) hit a 2-run single up the middle to score two unearned runs.

The Gorloks pushed its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third on an RBI double to right by sophomore catcher Joe Swanson (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine West) that plated freshman third baseman Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport), who had reached on a lead off single and then stole second for his 14th stolen base of the season.

Webster added two more runs in the fourth thanks to two singles and a ground-rule double by Kent.

The Panthers would drop Webster's lead to 8-2 in the sixth inning thanks to three hits, including an RBI single by Jake Kearney, but a second run was cut down at the plate as McMullin was tagged out on a throw from senior centerfielder Conner Wardlaw (Arnold, Mo./Jefferson College) to Swanson.

Principia would then added two more runs in the seventh thanks a walk, two hits batsmen, a passed ball and a single against junior Mike Kogut (Willow Springs, Ill./South Suburban College), who relieved Beaver to open the seventh. In fact, Kogut, who retired just two of the six batters he faced, was replaced following Zach Grennie's 2-run single that brought the Panthers within four runs at 8-4. With the tying run on deck, Webster turned to sophomore reliever Shane Donovan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett), who got out of the jam by forcing McMullin to fly out to right to seal his second save of the year.

Beaver (2-1) earned the win as he pitched six innings and allowed seven hits and two runs, while striking out six and walking nine in his 70 pitch outing.

Strong (2-2) took the loss for the Panthers as he pitched all six innings and allowed 11 hits and eight runs (six earned runs), while walking one and striking out two.

Swords led the way offensively in the opener as he was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Tholl and Kent had two hits each as Webster finished with 11 hits, four extra base hits. Dinter and Kent combined for five RBIs, while Tholl and Kent each scored two runs.

Grennie, McMullin and Ed Bargmann each had two hits for the Panthers as they recorded eight hits in the loss, including two doubles by McMullin.

Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Webster jumped in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit as Wick walked to lead off the frame, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dinter.

The Gorloks lead grew to 3-0 in the second inning thanks to four walks, including a bases loaded walk issued to Tholl, a stolen base, a wild pitch, an RBI double by redshirt junior catcher Talon Parke (Mesa, Ariz./Saint Joseph's).

Those three runs would more than enough offense for junior Adrian Santiago (Chicago, Ill./Oakton College) as he made his fourth start of the season and pitched five scoreless innings, while scattering three hits, walking two and striking out two to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Webster added three more runs in the third inning thanks to three hits, including a 2-run homer by Parke over the fence in right field. The homer by Parke was his first career home run as a Gorlok. The other run was brought home on an RBI single by Strohm, which plated Swords, who walked, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball.

The Gorloks offense really came to life in the fourth inning as they sent 12 hitters to the plate and recorded six hits and scored seven runs, including two runs each on a pinch hit single to left center by junior Austin LaHue (Stillwater, Okla./Stillwater) and a pinch hit double to right center off the bat of redshirt sophomore A.J. Smith (DuQuoin, Ill./DuQuoin). The other RBIs in the inning came from Kent and Strohm on singles, while the other run scored on a throwing error by Principia catcher Ryan Eisenauer on a steal of third by Tholl, who had led off the inning with a ground-rule double.

Leading 13-0, the Gorloks would score six more runs in the fifth inning as they sent nine batters to the plate and recorded three hits and took advantage to three walks. Both of Webster's runs in the inning came on 3-run homers by Smith and sophomore centerfielder Adam Lovell (Lafayette, Ind./Saint Joseph's) to give Webster a 19-0 lead. The homer by Lovell was his second of the season, while Smith's homer was his first ever collegiate home run.

Senior Dakota DeFreitas (Brechin, Ontario/John Wood CC) would pitch the sixth in his first appearance on the mound this season as he walked one and struck out one.

The Gorloks would complete the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a double by sophomore third baseman Vincent Vega (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North), a passed ball, a single to left center by freshman shortstop Kellen Quigley (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and an RBI groundout by senior pitcher C.J. Lee (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), who was pinch hitting for Lovell.

Freshman Trey Neighbors (Maybank, Texas/Maybank) would preserve Santiago's shutout, despite running into trouble in the seventh as he walked the bases loaded with two out, before forcing McMullin to foul out to end the game.

Four Gorloks recorded two hits in the nightcap as Smith, Strohm, Quigley and Parke all had two hits in the win, while Smith drove home a career-high five runs and Parke drove home a career-high three runs. In addition, six Gorloks scored two runs in the game.

Strohm recorded three of Webster's nine steals, while Swords had two steals to move his season total to 16 on the year. Webster's other steals came from Tholl, Dinter, Wardlaw and freshman shortstop Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augstine).

Zach Grennie (1-1) took the loss for the Panthers as he pitched three innings and allowed four hits and six runs (five earned), while walking six and striking out two.

Webster will return to action this coming Saturday, April 21 as they host MacMurray College for an SLIAC doubleheader at GCS Credit Union Ballpark beginning at 4 p.m.
