EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Webster University pushed its win streak to 12 straight games here Tuesday evening as the 18th-ranked Gorloks swept a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Greenville University at Roy Lee Field at the Simmons Baseball Complex on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
The Gorloks opened Tuesday's doubleheader by posting a 3-1 win in the opener thanks to a strong starting pitching outing from freshman
Sean Beaver (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch), before scoring 17 runs, including tallying nine unearned runs in the eighth inning, en route to posting a 17-0 win in eight innings in the nightcap.
Tuesday's doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Greenville, but overnight rain on Monday made the baseball field at Greenville unplayable and forced the two games to be reloacted to the campus of SIUE.
With the two victories, Webster improves its record to 26-7 overall and 15-2 in the SLIAC, while Greenville falls to 15-17 overall and 10-9 in the SLIAC.
In the doubleheader, Webster finished with 18 hits, including senior designated hitter
Ben Dinter (Gurnee, Ill./College of Lake County) going 5-for-7 at the plate with four runs scored and 4 RBIs, including hitting a 2-run triple and a solo home run in the nightcap.
Webster jumped out in front 2-0 in the second inning of Tuesday's opener thanks to two hits and a Greenville error. In the inning, senior centerfielder
Conner Wardlaw (Arnold, Mo./Jefferson College) reached on a two-out fielding error by Panthers shortstop Jesse Getz and would then steal second and scored on an RBI double to right by junior second baseman
Danny Strohm (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) off of Panther hurler Jonah Moore.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the third inning thanks to a ground-ruled double by Dinter, a wild pitch and fielder's choice off the bat of freshman third baseman
Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport).
Greenville would pull within 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to two hits and an error by Swords at third base. The unearned run would be the only one allowed in the game by Beaver, who pitched six strong innings to improve to 3-1 on the year. Beaver scattered five hits, while walking one and striking out six in his 79 pitch outing.
Webster threatened to blow open the opener in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with two out thanks to singles by Dinter and Swords and a walk to Wardlaw, before Moore got out of the jam by forcing Strohm to fly out to center to end the inning.
Sophomore
Shane Donovan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) would pitch the seventh as he allowed one hit and struck out one to pick up his fifth save of the season. The five saves are tied for third on the school's single season chart.
In addition to Dinter's two hits, Webster's other three hits came from Swords, Strohm and freshman shortstop
Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augustine).
Greenville had six hits, including two apiece from Klaiton Wolff and Bryce Pearce.
Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Webster got things rolling early as they sent 10 hitters to the plate and recorded four hits and took advantage to two Greenville errors to score six runs. In the inning, senior leftfielder
Mike Wick doubled to lead off the game and moved to third on a bunt by junior rightfielder
Nate Tholl (Tinley Park, Ill./John A. Logan CC) and on the bunt, Greenville's Getz committed an error. Dinter would bring home the first two runs on his 2-run triple to right center. Sophomore first baseman
Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) followed with an RBI single. A little later in the inning, Strohm brought home the fourth run on his RBI groundout and Staker would drive home two more runs on his single up the middle off of Panther starter Adam Lamb.
The Gorloks lead grew to 7-0 in the next inning on Dinter's solo homer over the wall in left center. The homer by Dinter was his second of the season.
Those seven runs would be more than enough for senior hurler
Austin Beccue (Red Bud, Ill./Gibault Catholic) as he tossed seven shutout innings and scattered four hits, while walking one and striking out a career high six in his 95 pitch outing. With his performaner, Beccue improved to 3-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 1.59 on the season.
Webster added another run in the fourth inning thanks to a ground-ruled double by Staker, a fly out to right, a walk to Tholl and an RBI on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dinter. Dinter had four RBIs in the game, which was a season high.
In the eighth inning, Webster sent 14 hitters to the plate and would use four errors and four hits to score nine runs, all of which in the inning were unearned. The big hits in the inning were a 3-run homer by senior pinch hitter
Dakota DeFreitas (Brechin, Ontario/John Wood CC) over the left field wall and a 2-run single up the middle by Strohm. In the inning, Greenville used three pitchers and each one of them recorded just one out.
Along with Dinter's three hits and 4 RBIs, while Staker also added three hits, two runs scored and 2 RBIs, while Strohm's 4 RBIs were a season high.
Andrew Torbeck had two of Greenville's four hits in the nightcap.
The Panthers committed seven errors in the game that led 13 of Webster's 17 runs in the game being unearned.
Webster will look to add three more wins to its win streak this coming weekend as they travel to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, for a three-game SLIAC West Division series against Iowa Wesleyan. The teams will play a single game on Saturday, April 28 at 3 p.m., before concluding the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 29 beginning at 1 p.m.
