Garcia's Two Goals Propel Men's Soccer to Road Win Over Maranatha Baptist

WATERTOWN, Wis. - Three days after suffering its first loss of the season at home to Millikin University, Webster University's men's soccer team erased that memory of that match here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks used two goals from junior midfielder Juan Garcia (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) to post a 2-0 shutout victory over Maranatha Baptist.

With the win, Webster improves to 8-1-0 on the season, while Maranatha Baptist falls to 0-8-0 on the season.

With the shutout, Webster, who is ranked seventh in this week's latest United Soccer Coaches Central Regional rankings, has now recorded shutouts in eight of its nine matches this season as they have allowed just three goals in nine matches and a total of 810 minutes.

Webster was in control for almost the entire match on Saturday as they recorded a season high 27 shots and had 11 of those shots on goal, including taking 16 of those shots after halftime to extend its non-conference road win streak to five consecutive matches.

While its offense had 27 shots and 11 shots on goal, Webster's defense was just as strong as they allowed just six shots and three shots on goal, including two shots on goal in the second half.

Garcia would get the scoring started with a little less than two minutes left in the first half as he scored on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute to break up a scoreless match.

The Gorloks second goal of the game came with 36 seconds left in the match as Garcia took a pass from both freshman forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) and freshman midfiedler Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood) to tally his first career two goal match. Garcia, who is in his third season as a Gorlok, has now scored all three of his collegiate goals this season.

Garcia is the second Gorlok to score two goals in a match this season as Murvin scored two goals to help the Gorloks to its 2-0 win last Friday at Rhodes College.

Murvin led the way offensively for the Gorloks on Saturday as he finished with a season high seven shots and also had a season high five shots on goal. Murvin leads the Gorloks in goals this season with five.

In addition to Murvin's seven shots, sophomore midfielder Hunter Olaso (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii/Kealakehe) added four shots, while Pearson and junior midfielder Chris Clay (Quincy, Ill./Millikin) added three shots in the win.

Webster sophomore goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) faced just three shots and finished with three saves to moves its record to 7-1-0 on the year. Amick has allowed just three goals in eight matches and 720 minutes of action and has recorded seven shutouts.

The Sabercats got three shots from Tyler Nelson, while Nathan Campbell added two shots and two shots in goal in the loss.

Andrew Taylor (0-8-0) took the loss in the net as he allowed two goals and had nine saves.

Webster will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 25 as they host Illinois Wesleyan (5-1-0) in a 7 p.m. non-conference match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
