FENTON, Mo. - Webster University men's soccer opened its 2018 home schedule here Thursday evening by posting a 1-0 victory over Harris-Stowe State University at World Wide Technology Soccer Park to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Â
The 3-0 start by the Gorloks is the sixth in school history and first since the 1999 team opened 3-0. In addition, the shutout win was Webster's third straight and is the first since the 1995 season that the Gorloks have opened a season posting three straight shutout victories.
Â
In Thursday's match, which was the first home contest of the season for Webster after they played road matches last weekend at Monmouth and Minnesota-Morris, neither team was able to score in the opening half despite combining for 12 shots and five shots on goal.
Â
The Gorloks would finally break up the shutout just a little over two minutes into the second half as freshman midfielder
Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood) scored goal from eight yards off a pass from junior defender
Juan Garcia (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne)Â out to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of the season for Pearson.
Pearson had a chance for his second goal in Thursday's match as his shot in the 57th minute was saved by HSSU goalkeeper John Jancewicz and about five seconds later, junior midfielder
Edin Mehmedovic (St. Louis, Mo,/Mehlville) missed a shot wide left to leave the score, 1-0, in Webster's favor.
After being held to just five shots in the first half, the Gorloks offense recorded eight shots in the second half, including four shots on goal.Â
Pearson and freshman forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) each had three of WU's 13 shots, while Mehmedovic added shots in the win. All three of Pearson's shots came in the second half, while Murvin recorded two of his shots after halftime.
HSSUÂ (0-3-0) finished the night with 14 shots and had six shots on goal, including two in the final three minutes of game, including a shot by Sanchayn Lawrence with 43 seconds left that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) to preserve his third straight shutout in goal.Â
Amick, who is now 3-0-0 on the season, finished the night with six saves and in 270 minutes this season, the Second-Team All-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection last season has recorded nine saves, faced 22 shots and is now 8-0-3 in his collegiate career and has had five shutouts in those 11 career appearances.
Christopher Baruani led the Hornets with five shots, including three shots on goal, while Lawrence and Eric Habonimana each had two shots in the loss.Â
Jancewicz (0-3-0) took the loss in net for the Hornets and finished with five saves and allowed just that one goal in 90 minutes of action.
The Gorloks will continue its three-match homestand on Sunday, Sept. 9 as they host Illinois College in a 6 p.m. match at WWT Soccer Park.Â
