Volleyball Sweeps Principia, Extends Win Streak to Four Straight Matches

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University Volleyball continued its hot play in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference here Tuesday evening by posting a three-set victory over Principia College (25-11, 25-11, 25-16) at Grant Gymnasium. 

With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to four consecutive matches as they improve their record to 11-9 overall and 8-3 in the SLIAC, while Principia falls to 4-14 overall and 1-8 in the league. Tuesday's win was also Webster's fourth straight in straight sets. 

In Tuesday's match, Webster's offense hit .223 as they recorded 45 kills and also had 11 aces, while on defense, the Gorloks held Principia to an .008 attack percentage and had 76 digs and three blocks. 

Freshman outside hitter Lauren Borik (Belleville, Ill./Althoff) paced Webster's offense with 12 kills and a .421 attack percentage, while junior middle blocker Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Carl Sandburg College) and junior outside hitter Samantha Kruse (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) each had eight kills and combined for five aces as Price had three aces and Kruse added two aces. Price also hit a season best .500 in the win. Borik has now recorded double-digit kills in 10 consecutive matches. 

In addition to Price's three aces, senior setter Jenna Rodriguez (Smithton, Illl./Freeburg) and sophomore defensive specialist Kyra Gensel (Clarkton, N.C./Harrells Christian) also both had three aces on the night. Rodriguez added 15 assists and nine digs. 

Junior setterr Emma Larson (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West) had 10 assists and eight digs, while sophomore setter Ali Spohr (Quincy, Ill./Quincy) added eight assists and nine digs. Webster finished the match with 41 assists. 

On defense, Gensel and junior libero Kristen Farrah (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) each had 13 digs, while Kruse added 11 digs. The 13 digs by Farrah extended her streak to double-digit digs to 55 consecutive matches. For the match, nine Gorloks recorded at least two digs. 

Principia and Webster were tied at 2-all early in the first set before the Gorloks used a 7-0 run that was aided by three consecutive aces by Price to give WU a 9-2 lead. The Panthers, though, responded with a 9-5 run to pull within 14-11. That would be as close as Principia would get as the Gorloks closed out the set by scoring the final 11 points to post a 25-11 win. In the set, WU hit .237 and had 14 kills, while PC had just five kills and hit .000. The Gorloks also had six aces in the set as Rodriguez and Price each had three aces. 

In the second set, Webster scored the first five points of the set and led 11-1 when PC stopped the run by scoring back-to-back points. The Gorloks, though, would use an 11-3 run to push its lead to 22-6. The run was capped by two kills from Kruse and a kill from freshman middle hitter Julia Frey (Teutopolis, Ill./Teutopolis). PC would score two straight points to drop WU's lead to 22-8. The teams would each three points each to close out the set, including WU capping the 25-11 set win with a kill from senior outside hitter Sarah Jacobs (Carbondale, Ill./Murphysboro). WU hit .286 and had 17 kills in the set, while Principia had four kills and hit .000. 

The third set was a competitive affair as it featured eight ties and five lead changes. In the set, Webster jumped out to an 8-5 lead, before Principia used a 6-2 run  capped by a kill from Nikki Matters to take an 11-10 lead. The Gorloks, though, responded with an 11-1 run take a 21-12 lead. PC would score four of the next six points to pull within 23-16, before WU scored the final two points, including capping the 25-16 win with a kill from Kruse. In the set, WU hit .167 as they had 14 kills, while PC hit .019 with nine kills.

Matters paced Principia with seven kills and 16 digs, while Devon Marunde added 15 assists and nine digs in the loss. 

The Gorloks will look to make five straight wins this coming Thursday, Oct. 17 as they travel to Eureka, Ill., for a 7 p.m. SLIAC match against Eureka College.
