Men's Soccer Falls at Home to Westminster

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University held a 20-13 edge in shots here Wednesday evening in its men's soccer match against Westminster (Mo.) College, but the Blue Jays scored goals early in both halves and then withstood a late rally by the Gorloks to post a 2-1 win in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.

With the setback, Webster falls to 7-5-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the league, while Westminster improves to 2-9-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the SLIAC. The loss was the third consecutive for the Gorloks since picking up a 7-0 win at Eureka to open SLIAC play on Oct. 5.

Along with holding a 20-13 edge in shots, the Gorloks also held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks in Wednesday's match.

Sophomore defender Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) prevented a shutout for the Gorloks in the 85th minute as he took a pass from sophomore midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood-Richmond Heights) and connected from 15 yards for his first career goal.

Haugen's goal snapped a 175 minute scoreless streak for the Gorloks that had dated to late in the 88th minute against Iowa Wesleyan.

Following Haugen's goal, the Gorloks had two chances to force a tie in the final 81 seconds as senior defender Justin Schmidt (St. Louis, Mo./Metro) had his shot go wide left with 81 seconds left and then with about two seconds left in the match, freshman defender Tavis Cameron (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) had his shot just miss the goal as it went wide left of the goal to seal the Blue Jays win.

Westminster, who has now won two straight matches in the series against Webster, got on the scoreboard in the third minute of the match as Patrick Wisnewski took a pass from Freddy Nene and connected on a shot from eight yards out.

That would be the only scoring in the first half as the teams combined for 14 shots and six shots on goal.

Wisnewski gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute as he took a pass from Jordan Kahrhoff and found the net from seven yards out.

Sophomore forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) paced Webster's offense with six shots, while Pearson added three shots in the setback. For the match, 10 different Gorloks took shots, with two of those shots on goal coming from junior forward Ben Aziz (Paris, France/Marquette). The other shots on goal came from Haugen and senior midfielder Juan Garcia (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne).

Wisnewski took four shots and all four of those shots were on goal for the Blue Jays. In addition to Wisnewski, Nene and Justin Gerdiman each took two shots in the win for Westminster.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Amick (2-4-0) took the loss in the net for the Gorloks as he played all 90 minutes and while allowing two goals, he also recorded six saves.

Connor Bandre' (2-5-0) earned the win in goal for the Blue Jays as he had three saves and allowed just that one goal to Haugen.

The match featured a total of 18 fouls and three yellow cards, including two yellow cards issued to Webster players.

Webster will look to snap its three match losing skid this coming Saturday, Oct. 19 as they host Fontbonne University for a 1 p.m. SLIAC match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
