Men's Soccer Scores Season High 10 Goals in Shutout Win at Blackburn

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – Webster University Men's Soccer saw its offense explode for a season high 10 goals here Wednesday afternoon as the Gorloks collected a 10-0 shutout win over Blackburn College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Blackburn Stadium.

With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to two straight games and keeps its postseason hopes alive as the Gorloks improve their record to 9-5-1 overall and 3-3 in the SLIAC, while Blackburn falls to 2-10-1 overall and 0-6 in the league.

The 10 goals were the most scored by the Gorloks in a match since scoring 11 goals in an 11-0 win on Oct. 4, 2014 at Eureka College. The 10 goals are tied for the fifth most in a game in school history.

Prior to Wednesday's scoring outburst, the Gorloks had scored a total of 11 goals in its last five matches, with seven of those 11 goals coming at Eureka on Oct. 5.

For the match, Webster held a 26-2 edge in shots and had a 15-1 edge in shots on goal. The Gorloks took 13 shots in half of Wednesday's match. 

Sophomore forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove), junior midfielder Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) and junior midfielder Logan Takizawa (Holualoa, Hawaii/Konawaena) each scored two goals apiece, while Murvin, sophomore defender Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and freshman forward Colby Kapp (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) each had two assists in the win.

Along with scoring 10 goals, the Gorloks also had an assist on each of its 10 goals as the 10 assists were tied for fourth most in a match in school history and the most assists in a match since recording 12 at Eureka on Oct. 4, 2014.

Murvin, who has now had three career two goals matches, finished Wednesday's game with a career high six points (2 goals, 2 assists) and the six points were the most tallied in a match by a Gorlok since Drew Quisenberry also totaled six points at Eureka on Oct. 29, 2015. In that match, Quisenberry scored three goals for a hat trick.

In addition to the six points by Murvin, Takizawa finished with five points, while Kohler and Haugen each had four points in the win as Kohler scored two goals and Haugen added two assists to go with his goal.

Other goals in the match were scored by freshman forward Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla), sophomore midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood-Richmond Heights) and junior forward Matt Ceriotti (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH).

Along with the two assists by Haugen, Kapp and Murvin, the other assists in the match came from Gabriele, Takizawa, sophomore midfielder Henok Moges (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) and senior midfielder Edin Mehmedovic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville).

Murvin got the scoring started in the opening two-plus minutes as he took a pass from Haugen and connected on a shot into the right corner of the goal. Kohler gave WU a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute as he took a pass from Murvin and connected into the left corner of the goal. 

Haugen's header in the 25th minute off a pass from Kapp gave the Gorloks a 3-0 lead and Gabriele made it 4-0 in the 36th minute as he took a pass from Kapp and found the left corner of the goal for his third goal of the season. 

Leading 4-0 at the half, Kohler would score the Gorloks fifth goal just a little under three minute into the second half as he connected on a shot from the middle of the box off an assist by Moges. Kohler's second goal of the match gave the Gorloks a 5-0 lead. 

About two minutes after Kohler's second goal, Takizawa scored his first of two goals off an assist by Murvin to give WU a 6-0 lead. The lead grew to 7-0 after Pearson connected on a header off an assist by Haugen in the 53rd minute.

Murvin would make it 8-0 early in the 55th minute as he used an assist from Mehmedovic and put shot into the right corner of the goal. 

The final two goals by Takizawa and Ceriotti came in the 67th and 71st minutes of the match off of assists by Gabriele and Takizawa respectively. 

Murvin, Takizawa and junior forward Ben Aziz (Paris, France/Marquette) each took four shots, while Kohler, Mehmedovic, Kapp and senior midfielder Juan Garcia (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) each had two shots in the win. On the day, 12 different Gorloks recorded a shot and eight Gorloks had at least one shot on goal, with Takizawa putting all four of his shots on goal.

Jack McGrath and Alex Escamilla took the Beavers two shots in the match. 

Junior goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) earned the start in net on Wednesday and he played the first half and did not face a shot on goal to earn the win and improve to 4-4-0 on the season. Senior Eli Smith (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) played the second half in net and faced just one shot and recorded WU's only save of the match.

Chase Fiedler started in goal for Blackburn and in 29 minutes of action, he allowed three goals and made three saves, while Dawson Klunk played the final 61 minutes and allowed seven goals and made two saves for the Beavers. 

Webster also held a 5-0 edge in corner and both teams were whistled for a total of five fouls each.

The Gorloks will look to make it three consecutive wins this coming Saturday, Oct. 26 as they host MacMurray for a 1 p.m. Senior Day match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo. Prior to the match, the Gorloks will honor its four seniors in a prematch ceremony. This year's seniors are Garcia, Mehmedovic, Smith and defender Justin Schmidt (St. Louis, Mo./Metro).
