FENTON, Mo. - Webster University and Greenville University put on a hard-fought 90 minute battle here Saturday afternoon, but a goal late in the 36th minute by Greenville helped the Panthers post a 1-0 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Gorloks in the regular season finsle for both teams at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
With the setback on Saturday, Webster, who needed a win to remain alive for a spot in next week's SLIACÂ Tournament, concludes its 2019 campaign with an 11-6-1 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the league, while Greenville improved to 10-8 overall and 6-3 in the league and remains alive for a spot in the SLIAC Tournament.Â
Despite the loss, Webster held a 17-7 edge shots and also had an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal against the Panthers, including a 12-2 edge in shots in the second half.Â
It marked the 14th time this season that Webster had outshoot its opponent and the Gorloks posted a 9-5 record in those 14 matches on the year.Â
Perhaps Webster's best scoring chance came in the 77th minute as junior forward
Ben Aziz (Paris, France, Marquette) had his header hit off the crossbar and nearly go into the goal and then with 56 seconds left in the match, sophomore forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) put a shot on goal, but Greenville goalkeeper Nick Holland saved the ball to keep the Gorloks off the board.
The only scoring in the match came in the 36th minute as Christian Gomez scored on a header off a pass from Jared McPeek to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.Â
After the goal, Webster's defense stiffened up as they allowed just two shots to the Panthers over the final 54 minutes of the match.Â
Murvin paced Webster's offense with five shots, while sophomore midfielder

Holland (9-7) earned the win in net for the Panthers as he recorded eight saves.Â
Gomez, McPeek and Juan Salazar took two shots each for Greenville in the win.
The 11 wins by the Gorloks marked the program's third consecutive winning season and the ninth winning season in the last 14 years.
