KISSIMMEE, Fla. - One day after scoring a season high nine runs in its 9-2 win over Salve Regina, Webster University Baseball bettered that season high by three runs as they scored 12 runs en route to posting a 12-2 win over Ohio Northern in its third game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational here Sunday morning at Osceola Heritage Park.
With Sunday's win, the 15th-ranked Gorloks improve to 6-2 on the season and 2-1 on its Florida trip, while Ohio Northern fell to 6-3 on the year.
In Sunday's game, which was called after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule, Webster scored in five of the six innings it batted, including tallying four runs in both the third and fifth innings against the Polar Bears.
Senior rightfielder
Nate Tholl (Tinley Park, Ill./John A. Logan CC) tied a career high with three runs, while junior All-American first baseman
Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro), redshirt junior designated hitter
A.J. Smith (DuQuoin, Ill./DuQuoin) and sophomore shortstop
Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augustine) each scored two runs in the win.
Along with scoring 12 runs, the Gorloks recorded 11 hits, all of which but one of the them were singles. Tholl, Smith and redshirt senior catcher
Talon Parke (Mesa, Ariz./Saint Joseph's) each recorded two hits on the day.
Sunday's win came despite the Gorloks defense uncharacteristically committing four errors that led to two unearned run to ONU. The four errors were a season high and the most since committing five errors last season in Florida against Wisconsin-La Crosse. Two of the four errors were committed by freshman pitcher
Brendan May (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney).
ONU opened Sunday's game by putting the first two runners on base thanks to a hit and a hit batsman by May. Those two runners would advance after May committed an throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. After getting an out on a fly to left, May would allow the first run on an RBI single to left by Will Davis. May, though, would prevent further damage as he struck out the next two hitters in order.
Webster would answer in the bottom of the second as they loaded the bases thanks to two walks and a single by Smith. Senior second baseman
Danny Strohm (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) would bring home Kent, who had walked to lead off the inning, with the first run on his fielder's choice grounder. Following Strohm's grounder, Staker would bring home the next run as his bunt down the first base line allowed Smith to score from third.
The Gorloks pushed its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third inning as they recorded three hits and took advantage of a hit batsman and a wild pitch to score four runs. The big hit in the inning a 2-run single to left by freshman leftfielder
Brandon Dryer (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe). The RBIs were the first two of Dryer's collegiate career.
ONU would pull within 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a hit and three Gorlok errors, including scoring its run on a throwing error by sophomore third baseman
Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport). The Polar Bears has another scoring chance in the inning Krue Thwaits was erased at the plate on a ground ball hit back to the pitcher by Michael Rocco.
Webster would get that run back in the bottom of the fourth as Tholl led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and would eventually score on another wild pitcher from ONU reliever Sean Sweeney.
The Gorloks put the game out of reach in the fifth inning as they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs on three hits. In the inning, Strohm led off with a single, moved to second after Staker was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced when Parke delivered a pinch-hit infield single to load the bases. After junior centerfielder
Aron Hopp (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln College) popped up for the first out, Tholl hit a single to left that scored Strohm. The next batter, Swords, drew a bases loaded walk to plate Staker. That walk to Swords chased Sweeney from the game and his replacement, Alex Dodson, would walk the first batter he faced, Kent, to bring home WU's third run. The final run was scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Parke.
In the sixth, Webster used three consecutive singles from Staker, Parke and Hopp to score its 12th and final run.
Sophomore
Andrew Padilla (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) relieved junior
Garrett Davis (Geneva, Ill./Elgiin CC) in the seventh and allowed just one hit and had two strikeouts in his season debut.
Davis, who relieved May in the fourth inning, earned the win in relief as he tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and allowed two hits in his outing. May pitched 3.2 innings and allowed three hits and two unearned runs, while striking out three and walking none.
Tommy Fleser (0-1) took the loss for the Polar Bears as he pitched 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and six runs, while walking four and striking out three. On the day, ONU's three pitchers combined for eight walks.
ONU finished with six hits, including two each by Luke Klinehoffer and Tyler Randick.
Webster will look to win its third straight game on Monday, March 11 as they face Rhode Island College in a 10 a.m. ET game at the Osceola Heritage Park Stadium, which is the former spring training stadium of the Houston Astros.
