Softball Collects Season High 12 Hits in Setback Against Coast Guard Academy

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Webster University Softball rapped out a season high 12 hits and closed the game by scoring runs in four of the final five innings here Tuesday morning en route to suffering a hard-fought 11-8 setback to the United States Coast Guard Academy in its seventh game of the PFX Spring Games played at the Osceola County Softball Complex.

With the setback, Webster falls to 1-8 on the season and is now 1-6 on its eight game Spring Break trip to Florida, while the Coast Guard Academy improves to 3-2 on the year.

In Tuesday's game, three Gorloks recorded two hits, including junior pitcher Kaitlyn Johnson (East Alton, Ill./Greenville University) going 2-for-2 at the plate for her first career multi-hit game. In fact, the two hits were the first two of Johnson's collegiate career. In addition to Johnson's two hit game, junior catcher Darian Morlan (Duchense, Utah/Trinidad State) had her second 2-hit game of the season and added a career high 3 RBI and Johnson's younger sister, freshman Haley Johnson (East Alton, Ill./Alton Marquette) also had two hits in the game, which were also her first two collegiate base hits.

Along with the three two hit games, Webster also recorded a season high tying two doubles, which were recorded by Morlan and junior centerfielder Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad). The double by Burroughs was just her second hit of the season and her first extra base hit of the year.

USCGA got on the scoreboard first in Tuesday's game as they used three hits to plate two runs in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead off of freshman pitcher Arianna Arias (Pomona, Calif./Bishop Amat), who started the game in the circle for the Gorloks.

Webster tied the game in the bottom of the third on a 2-run double to left center by Morlan. Morlan's double plated freshman rightfielder Taylor Jackson (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin) and senior second baseman Chelsea Snyder (Mount Vernon, Mo./Fort Scott CC), who had both reached on back-to-back singles to open the inning.

The Bears would break the game open in the fourth inning as they sent 10 hitters to the plate and scored five runs on six hits, all of which came off of junior pitcher Breelyn Craig (Victorville, Calif./Trinidad State), who replaced Arias in the circle with two outs in the second inning. The big hits in the inning were a 2-run singles by both Charlee Kraiss and Courtney McKenna.

In the bottom of the fifth, Webster got three of those runs back to pull within 7-5. In the inning, Haley Johnson reached on a one out single up the middle, moved to second when junior first baseman Avery Boccella (Gilbert, Ariz./Trinidad State) reached on an error by Kraiss at shortstop. The next hitter, Morlan, drew a walk following a 15 pitch at-bat that featured Morlan fouling off six straight pitches after the count reached 3-2. With the bases loaded, freshman shortstop Sheyla Iniguez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Johnson with the first run of the inning. Burroughs would then follow with a 2-run double to right center off of USCGA starting pitcher Sydney Arendt. Arendt would be replaced in the circle following Burroughs double by Julia Ferris and she prevented further damage by striking out freshman Renee Ruelas (San Bernardino, Calif./Grand Terrace) as a pinch hitter.

The Bears would respond in the top of the sixth as they used five hits and a passed ball to score four runs and push its lead to 11-5.

Webster would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth as they used three hits and two Coast Guard errors to plate two unearned runs and push within 11-7. In the inning, Kaitlyn Johnson reached on a leadoff single, moved to second when Snyder reached on an error by Kraiss and after a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, Morlan would bring home a run on her single to left field as Johnson and Snyder scored. The second run came in as a result of an throwing error by Coast Guard leftfielder Kayla Sowers.

Trailing 11-7 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Webster would add a run on a sacrifice fly by Snyder, but would get score another run as Ferris would strikeout Jackson to end the game. Snyder's sacrifice fly scored Burroughs, who walked to open the inning, before moving second on a bunt by senior third baseman Brienna Sheperd (Central Point, Ore./College of the Redwoods) and reaching third on a single by freshman rightfielder Gabrielle Novak (St. Louis, Mo./Notre Dame).

Craig (1-2) took the loss in the circle for the Gorloks as she pitched two innings in relief and allowed seven hits and five runs, while walking one and fanning one.

Ferris (2-1) earned the win for the Bears as she threw the final 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and three runs (one earned), while walking one and striking out three.

Claire Hurley had three of Coast Guard's 15 hits, while Carly Hattman, Maggie Perez, Kraiss, McKenna and Sowers each had two hits in the win.

Snyder and Haley Johnson each scored two runs for Webster.

The game featured four errors, including three by Coast Guard and the teams combined to leave 14 runners on base as Webster stranded eight and Coast Guard left six on base.

Webster will conclude play in the PFX Spring Games at 1:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday afternoon against Geneva (Pa.) College at the Osceola County Softball Complex.
