Staker's Four Hits, 4 RBI Help Lead Gorloks to Series Sweep Over Eureka

SAUGET, Ill. - Webster Baseball completed its three-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekend series here Sunday afternoon with Eureka College by posting an 11-2 win over the Red Devils in the series finale at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

With the win, sixth-ranked Webster improves to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the league, while Eureka falls to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in the league. In addition, the win also extended the Gorloks home win streak in conference play to 11 consecutive games dating to last season.

In Sunday's series finale, Webster's offense recorded 16 hits, including a career-best four hit game by sophomore shortstop Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augustine) and scored 11 runs, all of which came in the middle three innings of the game.

For the three game series against Eureka, Webster's offense came alive as they recorded 40 hits, scored 25 runs, hit 11 extra base hits and had 25 RBI and hit .412 as a team. Four Gorloks finished with at least five hits in the series, including sophomore third baseman Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) recording six hits, while Staker, senior rightfielder Nate Tholl (Tinley Park, Ill./John A. Logan CC) and junior All-American first baseman Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) each had five hits and combined to score 10 runs and 13 RBI.

Meanwhile, Webster's pitching was also strong as they posted a team ERA of 1.57 for the weekend, including five pitchers recording ERA's 0.00.

In Sunday's action, Eureka, who was shutout 10-0 in Saturday's second game of the doubleheader against the Gorloks, got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first thanks to a walk, ground out, stolen base and RBI double to left center by Grant Mullin off of junior lefthander Garrett Davis (Geneva, Ill./Elgin CC), who was making his first collegiate start on Sunday.

The lead remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth as the Gorloks offense, which had been held to just one hit through the first three innings, recorded five hits in the inning and scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead. In the inning, Tholl led off with a bunt single, stole second and would score on an RBI double by Swords. Swords would eventually score on a Kent run scoring single and then Staker brought home the third run on his bunt single between third and the pitcher's mound.

Webster's lead grew to 8-1 after four innings as the Gorloks had six hits and sent 11 hitters to the plate en route to plating five runs. Kent got the scoring started on his 2-run double to right center. Two batters later, Kent would score the third run on an RBI double to left center off the bat of senior second baseman Danny Strohm (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University and Staker would follow Strohm by bringing home two runs on his 2-run single to right. Mason Diederich, who replaced Brock Pettit on the mound before Strohm's double, would eventually load the bases an infield single by freshman catcher Zach Goodman (Greenwood Village, Colo./Arapahoe) and a hit batsman, before getting out of the jam by forcing Tholl to ground into a fielder's choice.

The Red Devils would plate their second run in the top of the sixth without the benefit of a hit as senior Adrian Santiago (Chicago, Ill,/Oakton College) relieved junior Matt Mulhearn (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) and would walk two and hit a batter in the inning before allowing a sacrifice fly off the bat of Braxten Ary.

Webster would plate three more runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to three hits. The RBI hits in the inning were a 2-run single up the middle by Strohm and an RBI double by Staker.

From that point, junior All-American reliever Shane Donovan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and senior Jay Blake (Imperial, Mo./Mineral Area CC) would allow just one hit, no runs, no walks and strike out three over the final three innings to seal WU's third straight win.

Mulhearn (3-1), who relieved Davis in the third after allowing the first two Eureka batters to reach base, picked up the win as he tossed three perfect innings and had three strikeouts.

Along with Staker's four hits and 4 RBI, Strohm finished with three hits and 3 RBI, while Tholl and Kent each had two hits in the win.

Pettit (0-2) took the loss on the mound for Eureka as he tossed 4.2 innings and allowed nine hits and seven runs, while walking two and fanning two.

Sean Green had three hits from the leadoff to pace Eureka, who finished with six hits in the game.

Both teams played error free and both teams left a combined 17 runners on base as Eureka stranded nine and Webster left eight on base.

The Gorloks will now take about a week off before returning to action next weekend as they travel to Fulton, Mo., for a three-game SLIAC series against Westminster (Mo.) College. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March beginning at 1 p.m. and then conclude the series with a single game on Sunday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
