WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University opened the home portion of its 2019 season schedule here Saturday by dropping both ends of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to Greenville University at Blackburn Park.
The Gorloks fell 8-7 in Saturday's first game after they rallied to score four runs over the final two innings and then lost 8-3 in the nightcap to the Panthers, who are the three-time reigning SLIAC Tournament champions.
With thw two losses, Webster fell to 1-13 overall and 0-2 in the SLIAC, while Greenville improved to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the league. The Gorloks have now lost 10 consecutive games since picking up a 2-1 win over Concordia-Moorhead on March 8 in its second game of the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
In Saturday's doubleheader, Webster's offense recorded 17 hits and totaled 10 runs, including seven runs in the opener. The seven runs in the opener are the third most this season by the Gorloks in a game.Â

In Saturday's opener, Webster jumped in front 2-0 in hte bottom of the third thanks to back-to-back singles by Snyder and junior first baseman
Avery Boccella (Gilbert, Ariz./Trinidad State) and then back-to-back RBI groundouts by Morlan and Jackson off of Greenville pitcher Caitie Opp.
The Panthers, though, would take the lead in the top of the fourth as they used three hits and took advantage of a throwing error by junior pitcher
Breelyn Craig (Victorville, Calif./Trinidad State) to plate three runs and take a 3-2 lead.Â
Webster would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a lead-off home run over the left field fence by Iniguez to retie the game at 3-all. The homer by Iniguez was her first of her collegiate career and the first home run of the season for the Gorloks.Â
Greenville retook the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a double by Deidra Holzhauer and RBI single by Beth Mersinger off of Craig, who started in the circle for the Gorloks.
The Panthers would push its lead to 8-3 in the top of the sixth as they used three hits, a bunt and a passed ball to plate four runs. In the inning, the big hits were a 2-run single up the middle by Maegan Stone and an RBI triple off the bat of Megan Barnett.Â
Webster would mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth as they used a lead-off pinch hit single by junior
Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad), an RBI double by Iniguez and an RBI single by Sheperd that chased Opp from the game. Stone would relieve Opp in the circle and she proceeded the retire the next two batters she faced to keep the score 8-5 heading to the seventh.
After junior Kailtlyn Johnson (East Alton, Ill./Greenville University) worked around a two-out double by Amanda Atteberry to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard and set up the bottom of the seventh for the Gorloks.
In the bottom of the seventh, after the first two Gorloks struck out, Jackson hit a double to left center, Burroughs then drew a walk and Iniguez followed with an RBI single to right to score Jackson and on the play, Burroughs was able to score on a throwing error by GU rightfielder Katie Myers. Stone, though, would prevent further damage as she forced Sheperd to ground out to end the game.
Craig (1-3) took the loss in the circle for the Gorloks as she tossed 5.1 innings and allowed 10 hits and eight runs (4 earned), while walking three and striking out five.Â
Iniguez had three of WU's nine hits in the opener, including four of those nine hits going for extra bases.Â
Greenville had 11 hits, including two each from Holzhauer, Stone and Cayla Speaks.Â
Opp (2-1) pitched 5-plus innings and allowed seven hits and five runs (5 earned), while walking one and fanning none. Stone would pitch the final 2-plus innings and allowed two hits and two runs (one earned), while walking one and striking out three for her first save of the season.Â
Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Greenville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to doubles by Barrett and Holzhauer off of freshman pitcher
Arianna Arias (Pomona, Calif./Bishop Amat).Â
The Gorloks would respond in the bottom of the first as they scored three runs on four hits and a Greenville error to take a 3-1 lead. In the inning, Morlan led off with a single, moved to second on an error and then scored on an RBI double to Jackson. After Sheperd would reach on a one out single to right and after she stole second to put runners on second and third, Kraus delivered a two-run double to right field off of Stone, who started in the circle for the Panthers.Â
Greenville tied the game at 3-all in the second inning as they scored on an Arias wild pitch and added a second run on a groundout.Â
The Panthers would plate a run in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead thanks to two Gorlok errors and a wild pitch by Johnson, who relieved Arias in the circle in the fourth inning.
Greenville pushed its lead to 8-3 in the seventh as they plated four runs on seven hits in the inning. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run single by Barrett.Â
Holzhauer would allowed a lead-off single in the bottom of the seventh to Snyder, before retiring the Gorloks in order to preserve the win and improve record to 1-2 on the season.Â
Johnson (0-4) took the loss in the circle for the Gorloks as she pitched 2.2 innings and allowed three hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out one and walking none.
Webster had eight hits as Kraus, Morlan and Sheperd each had two hits in the loss.
Greenville finished with 13 hits, including three hits by Barrett and Atteberry.Â
Both teams committed three errors in the game and combined to leave 16 runners on base as Greenville stranded 11 and Webster left five runners on base.
Holzhauer (1-2) earned the win in relief as she pitched four innings and allowed two hits and no runs, while striking out two.Â
Webster will return to action on Sunday, March 24 as they host Knox College for a doubleheader at Blackburn Park beginning at 1 p.m. Prior to game, Webster will honor its three seniors in a pregame ceremony. The three seniors this season are Snyder, Sheperd and catcher
