KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Webster University continued play here Saturday in the PFX Spring Games as the Gorloks fell to both Plymouth State and Kean University at Fortune Road Athletic Complex.Â
The Gorloks, who fell to 1-5 with Saturday's two setbacks, opened the day with a 6-2 loss to Plymouth State and then fell 13-0 Â to Kean in a game halted after five innings due to the 8-run mercy rule in the nightcap. The 13 runs scored by Kean were the most allowed in a game this season by the Gorloks.Â
On the day, Webster's defense struggled as they committed nine errors in Saturday's two games and those errors led to a total of seven unearned runs, including four unearned runs against Plymouth State. The nine errors came on the heels of Webster committing zero errors in its two games on Friday against Rhodes College and Concordia-Moorhead.
Against Kean, Webster committed a season high six errors.Â
One day after recording a total of 13 hits, Webster's offense finished the day with a total of six hits and scored only two runs, including being shutout by Kean. The shutout against Kean snapped a 19 game streak for the Gorloks of scoring at least one run that had dated to last season's game on April 18 at Fontbonne. In that game, WU was shutout, 9-0 by the Griffins.
In the opener against Plymouth State, the Panthers jumped in front 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning thanks to three hits and a throwing error by junior pitcher
Tori Lonsdale (Swansea, Ill./Southwestern Illinois) on a bunt play that allowed two runs to score.Â
PSU pushed its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a walk, a wild pitch and two hits, including a run scoring double off of freshman
Arianna Arias (Pomona, Calif./Bishop Amat), who relieved Lonsdale with one out in the second inning.Â
Trailing 6-0, the Gorloks would break up Caitlyn Miller's bid for a shutout in the top of the fifth inning as they plated two runs on two hits. In the inning, senior third baseman
Brienna Sheperd (Central Point, Ore./College of the Redwoods) was hit by a pitch with one out, advanced to second on a bunt by sophomore pinch hitter
Skiela Martinez (Whittier, Calif./California) and scored on an RBI single by Arias. Arias would score one batter later as freshman second shortstop
Sheyla Iniguez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) hit a single to right center.
In the sixth inning, junior centerfielderÂ
Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) recorded her first hit of the season as she lined a ball back up the middle off of Miller. Prior to that hit, Burroughs had been 0-for-9 at the plate on the season with two runs scored. Â Burroughs would advance to second on a bunt by senior catcher
Casey Cullinane (Simi Valley, Calif./College of the Redwoods), but was left at second as Miller got freshman leftfielderÂ
Taylor Jackson (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin) to ground out.Â
PSU put runners on second and third in the bottom of the sixth thanks to back-to-back fielding errors by Iniguez and freshman second baseman
Andrea Stephens (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin West), but Arias got out of the jam by getting Cassidy Emerson to ground out.Â
Lonsdale (0-3) took the loss in the circle for the Gorloks as she pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three hits and four runs (two earned runs), while walking one and fanning none. Arias pitched the final 4.2 innings and allowed four hits and two runs, while striking out one and walking four.Â
Webster had five hits in the game, including two from Arias. It was Arias' first two hit game of her collegiate career.Â
The Panthers had seven hits, including Debra Morrill recording two of those hits from the lead-off spot.Â
Miller (2-0) earned the win for Plymouth State as she tossed all seven innings and allowed five hits and two runs, while walking one and fanning two.Â
Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Kean scored three runs in the first and then tallied five runs in the second and plated two runs in the third to hold a 10-0 lead after three innings. The Cougars, who are now 6-1 on the season, added two runs in the fourth and tallied a 13th and final run in the fifth inning.Â
Against Kean, Webster was held without a hit until the fourth inning when senior second baseman
Chelsea Snyder (Mount Vernon, Mo./Fort Scott CC) broke up Jackie Riley's perfect game with her one out single through the left side. Prior to Snyder's hit, Riley had retired 10 consecutive Gorlok hitters in order.Â
In the fifth, Webster got a second runner on base as Riley walked junior first baseman
Avery Boccella (Gilbert, Ariz./Trinidad State) with one out. Riley, though, would retire the next two Gorloks in order, including ending the game with a strikeout of Sheperd.Â
Junior
Kaitlyn Johnson (0-1) took the loss in the circle as she tossed 1.1 innings and allowed seven hits and eight runs (7 earned runs), whole walking three and fanning none. Junior
Breelyn Craig (Victorville, Calif./Trinidad State) relieved Johnson in the second and pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed five hits and five runs (3 earned), while walking two and striking out four.Â
Riley (3-0) tossed five shutout innings and allowed one hit, while walking one and fanning three.
Kean picked up 12 hits in the win, including Riley going 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBI. In addition to Riley, Caroline Ratti and Olivia Zengel each had two hits and scored a combined four runs in the win.Â
Kean stranded 10 runners on bases and stole six bases for the game.
Webster will take Sunday off before returning to action on Monday, March 11 as they face Keene State and UMass-Dartmourth at 9:30 a.m. ET and 11:45 a.m. ET at the Fortune Road Complex Field #1.Â
