Softball Concludes Home Schedule With Two Setbacks Against Eureka College

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University concluded the home portion of its 2019 softball schedule at Blackburn Park here Saturday afternoon by dropping both ends of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Eureka College.

In Saturday's opener, Eureka collected 16 hits en route to posting a 7-1 win and then in the nightcap, the two teams combined for 36 hits, four errors and scored a total of 21 runs in Eureka's 14-7 win.

With the two losses, Webster falls to 7-21 overall and 4-10 in the SLIAC, while Eureka improves to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in the league. Saturday's two losses all but eliminated the Gorloks, who went 4-6 at home this season, from earning a spot in the SLIAC Tournament.

Webster's 14 hits in the nightcap were the second most of the season as the Gorloks had a season high 16 hits in the second game of it doubleheader on March 24 against Knox College.

Eureka had a total of 38 hits on Saturday, with 32 of those 38 hits being singles, including 15 singles in the opener. In addition, Eureka's 22 hits in the nightcap are the most ever allowed by the Gorloks in a game in school history.

In the nightcap, Eureka jumped in front 6-0 in the first inning thanks to five hits and error by the Gorloks. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run single by Klaire Wilmont off of freshman Arianna Arias (Pomona, Calif./Bishop Amat), who started in the circle for the Gorloks.

Webster, though, would come right back in the bottom of the first as they used three hits and an error to plate three runs to drop Eureka's lead to 6-3. In the inning, freshman leftfielder Taylor Jackson (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin) walked with out one, moved to second on a ground out by junior catcher Darian Morlan (Duchesne, Utah/Trinidad State) and moved to third on a single by junior pitcher Breelyn Craig (Victorville, Calif./Trinidad State) to load the bases. Junior centerfielder Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) brought out Jackson with the game's first run on her single to left center. After freshman shortstop Sheyla Iniguez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) reached on an error by Eureka shortstop Raelyn Payne, freshman rightielder Hailey Kesler (Bell City, Mo./Scott County Central) followed with a 2-run single to center to bring WU within three runs.

The Red Devils pushed its lead to 7-3 in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single by Faith Bachtold and then added two more runs to its lead in the third on a home run by Payne and an RBI double by Morgan Osborn to take a 9-3 lead.

Eureka extended its lead to 10-3 in the fourth as they used two hits and error by junior first baseman Kaitlyn Johnson (East Alton, Ill./Greenville University) to plate an unearned run.

The Gorloks added its fourth run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run over the fence in left field by senior third baseman Brienna Sheperd (Central Point, Ore./College of the Redwoods) off of Sidney Wightman, the Red Devils' starting pitcher.

Webster pulled within 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth as they used four hits and scored three runs. In the inning, Kesler led off with a homer over the fence in left and Jackson would later add a two-run double to right center that scored both Johnson and Sheperd, who had reached on a single and walked respectively earlier in the inning.

Eureka would complete the scoring in the top of the seventh as they used six hits to plate four runs and take a 14-7 lead. In the inning, Adrianna Zeman doubled home a run, Wilmot added an RBI single and Payne brought home two runs on a single through the left side off of Craig, who relieved Arias with one out in the first inning.

In the seventh, Iniguez led off with a single, but would be stranded at first as Erin Smith would retire the next three Gorloks in order to seal their doubleheader sweep.

Craig had three of WU's 14 hits, while Burroughs, Iniguez and Kesler each had two hits. In fact, every starter, but Arias, who did not have an at-bat, recorded at least one hit in the nightcap.

Payne, Zeman, Bachtold and Sydney Shubert each had four hits for the Red Devils as they had 22 hits in the win. Payne and Wilmont each had 3 RBI and every starter for Eureka scored at least one run in the nightcap.

Arias (2-6) took the loss as she pitched 0.1 innings and allowed four hits and six runs (six earned), while walking two and fanning none. Craig would pitch the final 6.2 innings and allow 18 hits and eight hits (seven runs), while walking and fanning one.

Wightman (6-1) earned the win for Eureka as she pitched five innings and allowed 10 hits and six runs (four runs), while walking two and striking out none.

Meanwhile, in the opener, Eureka jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the first on an RBi single to center by Allison Cagley off of Johnson, who started in the circle for the Gorloks.

The Red Devils lead grew to 3-0 in the top of the third thanks to RBI singles by Cagley and Wilmot.

Eureka added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Osborn and an error by Morlan to take a 5-0 lead.

The Gorloks, though, would find the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Jackson led off with a single, moved to second on fielder's choice by Arias and scored on an RBI single to left center by Burroughs off of Erin Smith. Smith, though, would prevent further damage as she retired the next two Gorloks in order to end the inning.

In the fifth, Eureka put two runners on base with one out, but Johnson would leave those two runners stranded as she forced Smith to fly out and Payne to pop out.

The Red Devils pushed its lead to 7-1 in the top of the sixth as they used three hits, including an RBI double by Morgan Ledbetter and an RBI single by Cagley to plate twp runs.

Jackson, Burroughs and Arias each had one of WU's three hits in the opener.

Shubert, Osborn and Cagley each had three hits for Eureka, while Zmean and Payne added two hits as the Red Devils collected 16 hits in the opener.

Johnson (1-7) pitched 5.1 innings for the Gorloks as she allowed 16 hits and seven runs (six earned), while striking out two and walking none.

Smith (9-2) earned the win the circle for the Red Devils as she tossed a complete game and scattered three hits, allowed one run and struck out two.

The Gorloks will now play its final eight games of the regular season on the road as they begin that road stretch this coming Wednesday, April 17 as they travel to Jacksonville, Ill., for a SLIAC doubleheader at MacMurray College beginning at 3 p.m.
