Women's Tennis Drops SLIAC Road Match to Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - Webster University continued St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis action here Wednesday evening by suffering a hard-fought 7-2 setback to Greenville University at the Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex.

With the setback, Webster falls to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the SLIAC, while Greenville improves to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the league.

In Wednesday's match, Webster picked up wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles and won a total of 39 games, including 27 games in singles play.

The Gorloks win in doubles came at the No. 1 spot in the line-up as senior Sara Rice (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) partnered with freshman Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) to post an 8-7 (7-5) win over Greenville's duo of Claudia Principal and Courtney Blaser. Rice's usual No. 1 playing partner, senior Madison Watts (Rogersville, Mo./Logan Rogersville) missed Wednesday's match.

Greenville won win the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead as they 8-4 at the No. 2 spot and 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.

Meanwhile, in singles action, Webster's win came at the No. 2 spot as sophomore Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) defeated Emma Wieland, 6-4, 6-3 to win her second straight match and improve to 4-4 on the season. Federhofer is normally the team's No. 3 player, but moved up to the No. 2 spot on Wednesday due to Watts' absence.

At the No. 1 spot, Rice battled back-and-fourth with Bailey Pearce as Rice fell 7-5 in the opening set, before falling 6-4 in the second set.

Ferguson also played strong at the No. 3 spot as she fell 7-5, 6-1 to Greenville's Principal.

The next three singles matches at No. 4-6 belonged to Greenville as Webster won just five of those 36 games.

Webster will return to action on Saturday, April 6 as they host Westiminster (Mo.) College in a 10 a.m. SLIAC match at the Webster Groves Tennis Complex in Webster Groves, Mo.
