Softball Picks Up Doubleheader Sweep Over Fontbonne, Snaps Five Game Losing Streak

ST. ANN, Mo. - Webster University put the brakes a five-game losing skid here Tuesday by posting a doubleheader sweep over Fontbonne University in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball action at ABC Park.

The Gorloks opened Tuesday's doubleheader by posting a 7-5 win in the opener thanks to a 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth by junior centerfielder Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) and then using a single in the bottom of the ninth by junior catcher Darian Morlan (Duchesne, Utah/Trinidad State) to post a 3-2 win in the nightcap over the Griffins on its home field.

With the sweep, Webster improves to 6-18 overall and 3-7 in the SLIAC, while Fontbonne fell to 7-19 overall and 5-7 in the league. The win also extended Webster's win streak over Fontbonne to four consecutive victories dating to last season, all of which were played at ABC Park.

Tuesday's game was originally scheduled to be played at Blackburn Park, but was moved to Fontbonne's home field, ABC Park, due to wet and unplayable field conditions at Blackburn Park. So Tuesday's game was a home game for Webster on Fontbonne's home field.

In the doubleheader, Webster's offense recorded 19 hits, including rapping out 11 hits in the opener. Morlan and freshman leftfielder Taylor Jackson (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin) went a combined 11-for-14 with six RBI in the doubleheader, while Burroughs went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and two runs scored in the first game.

In the opener, Webster jumped in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first as Burroughs and Jackson each reached on two-out singles and Burroughs would score the first run of the game on a fielding error by Fontbonne shortstop Gracie Morris off a ball hit by freshman first baseman Arianna Arias (Pomona, Calif./Bishop Amat).

The Griffins would respond by scoring four runs on four hits and two walks in the top of the second off of junior pitcher Kaitlyn Johnson (East Alton, Illl./Greenville University) to take a 4-1 lead. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run single from Lexi Becker.

From that point, the Gorloks would begin chipping away at Fontbonne's lead as they pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the third thanks to back-to-back doubles by Burroughs and Jackson and a single by Arias off of Maddy Strickland, who started in the circle for the Griffins.

FBU would push its lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Melanie Russo off of junior Breelyn Craig (Victorville, Calif./Trinidad State), who had relieved Jackson earlier in the inning after she allowed a lead-off single to Emelia Modglin.

The Gorloks would rally again as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to two hits and a walk. The big hit in the inning was a a 2-run double to left field by Morlan.

Craig would retire the Griffins in order in the sixth and in the bottom of the sixth, Craig drew a one-out walk from Becker, who relieved Strickland to open the inning. After Becker got freshman shortstop Sheyla Iniguez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) to fly out to center for the second out, Burroughs would follow and drill an 0-1 pitch by Becker over the fence in left center to give the Gorloks a 7-5 lead. The homer by Burroughs was her team-leading fourth of the season.

In the seventh, Modglin reached on an one-out single, before Craig ended the game by forcing Abby Richmond to line into a double play to Iniguez at shortstop.

Craig (2-4) earned the win as she pitched three innings and allowed two hits and no runs, while striking out two and walking none. Johnson pitched the first four-plus innings and allowed eight hits and five runs, while walking two and fanning two.

Burroughs finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and 2 RBI, while Jackson was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Morlan went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in the opener.

FBU finished with 10 hits in the opener as Modglin had three hits and Russo added two hits in the loss.

Becker (2-5) took the loss for the Griffins as she pitched one inning and allowed one hit and two runs, while walking one and fanning none.

In the game. Fontbonne committed two errors and the two teams left a combined 11 runners on base as WU stranded six and Fontbonne left five on base.

Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Webster would once score first in the bottom of the opening inning as Jackson brought home Iniguez with her RBI single to left. Iniguez had reached on a one-out single down the left field line and then moved to second on a wild pitch by Becker, who started in the circle for the Griffins.

FBU had a scoring opportunity in the second as they used two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases, but Arias, who started in the circle for the Gorloks, got out of the jam by striking out Diamond Thomas looking on a 2-2 pitch.

Webster put two runners on base thanks to an error and a bunt single by Morlan in the bottom of the second, but couldn't score as senior third baseman Brienna Sheperd (Central Point, Ore./College of the Redwoods) was picked off at second base.

Neither team would mount much offense following the first two innings until the sixth as FBU took advantage of two errors and a hit in the top of the sixth to plate an unearned run to tie the game.

After both teams couldn't score in the seventh to force extra innings, FBU would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth as Thomas, who was placed on second to open the inning thanks to the international tiebreaker rule, scored thanks to a bunt and an RBI single up the middle by Morris off of Arias.

In the bottom of the eighth, Johnson opened the inning on second and would score the tying run after moving to third on a bunt by Iniguez and an RBI single by Jackson.

The Griffins would open the ninth by putting Becker on third thanks to a bunt by Russo off of Craig, who replaced Arias in the circle to open the inning. With one out and go-ahead run on third, Craig would strike out Daisy Watkins for the second out and force Emily McNiff to ground out to Iniguez to end the inning with the score still tied at 2.

Craig was placed on second to open the bottom of the ninth and moved to third on a bunt by Sheperd and would score when the next hitter, Morlan, drilled a single deep in the hole at shortstop to plate Craig with the winning run.

The Gorloks finished the nightcap with eight hits, including three hits apiece by Jackson and Morlan.

Craig (3-4), who won both games in the circle on Tuesday, pitched the one inning and allowed no runs and no hits, while striking out one. Arias pitched eight innings and allowed four hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out four and walking one.

Becker (2-6), who lost both games for the Grffins on Tuesday, tossed 8.1 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs (one earned run), while walking two and fanning one.

In the nightcap, the teams combined to leave 15 runners on base as FBU stranded eight and WU left seven runners on base.

The Goloks will have little time to savor Tuesday's doubleheader sweep as they host Iowa Wesleyan for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 10 at Blackburn Park in the SLIAC Game of the Week. First pitch for Wednesday's doubleheader is set for 4 p.m., with the second game to follow about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
