FENTON, Mo. - Webster University was forced to postpone its 2019 men's soccer season opener on Friday evening against Monmouth College due to lightning and inclement weather that stuck the area about two hours before game time at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
Friday's opener was scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff, but the teams never took the field as they sat in the locker rooms until about 8 p.m. when it was decided to postpone the match.
"The lightning was constant throughout the nearly two hours we sat around waiting for a break in the weather. After sitting around for about two hours, it was decided by both teams and the officials that the weather wasn't going to allow us to play the match tonight," Webster men's soccer head coach
Mike Siener said. "I'm hopeful we will be able to reschedule for another date this season."
Siener said that no make-up date for Friday's match with Monmouth has been decided at this time.
With Friday's postponment, the Gorloks will now open its 2019 season on Monday, Sept. 2 with a 2 p.m. match against Minnesota-Morris at World Wide Technology Park. The Gorloks earned a 1-0 win over the Cougars last season in Morris, Minn.
