WAVERLY, Iowa - Playing their third match in less than 18 hours here Saturday afternoon, Webster University hit .073 as a team as Concordia College-Moorhead (Minn.) was able to pick up a three-set sweep over the Gorloks (22-25, 20-25, 18-25) in both teams final match at the Wartburg College Knights Volleyball Classic.
With the setback, Webster concludes the two-day event hosted by Wartburg College with a 1-2 record and is now 4-4 overall on the season, while Concordia-Moorhead improves to 3-9 on the season.
Against the Cobbers, Webster's offense recorded 32 kills and had six service aces, but hit just .073 for the match, including hitting under .050 percent in the first and third sets.
Leading the way offensively for the Gorloks on Saturday was junior outside hitter
Samantha Kruse (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo), who had nine kills, 10 digs, two blocks and hit .238. In addition to Kruse, junior middle hitter
Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Carl Sandburg College) added seven kills, three blocks and hit .263 and freshman outside hitter
Lauren Borik (Belleville, Ill./Althoff) had six kills to pace the offensive attack.
Defensively, Webster recorded 69 digs and tallied 6.5 total blocks, including three solo blocks. Junior libero
Kristen Farrah (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) paced the Gorlok defense with a match high 26 digs to increase her career dig total to 1,524 digs, which is seventh on the school's all-time list. In addition to Farrah, senior setter
Jenna Rodriguez (Smithton, Ill./Freeburg) added 12 digs and six assists, while junior setter
Emma Larson (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West) had 11 digs and nine assists.
Sophomore middle hitter
Kylie Burke (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) had two blocks, including a solo block for the Gorloks.
The Cobbers finished the match with 40 kills and hit .198 as a team on offense and recorded 62 digs and nine blocks on defense.
Anna Brakke led the way with 16 kills and hit .306, while Gabby Renelt added eight kills for the Cobbers offense. Jill Klaphake and Gabby DeBoer each had 17 assists and Bailey Gronner had four blocks, including two solo blocks in the win.
The Gorloks will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 as they host Rose-Hulman for a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Grant Gymnasium. The match will mark the first home contest of the season for the Gorloks as they played their first eight matches this season on the road.
