OLIVET, Mich. - Webster University Men's Soccer continued its strong play here Sunday afternoon as the Gorloks extended its win streak to four straight matches following its 3-1 non-conference victory over Olivet College at the Cutler Athletic Complex.
With the win, Webster improves to 5-1-1 overall on the season, while Olivet falls to 3-4-1.
In Sunday's match, which was Webster's third match away from home this season, the Gorloks outshot the Comets, 16-7, including holding an 8-6 edge in shots on goal in winning its fourth straight match.
The Gorloks got the scoring started in the 32nd minute as senior midfielder
Juan Garcia (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) scored on a penalty kick to give WU a 1-0 lead in the match. The goal was the first of the season for Garcia.
Olivet, though, would tie the match in the 37th minute as Cole Miller took a pass from Coda Mendoza and scored from about 10 yards out. Miller's shot was just the second of the match for the Comets.
Webster would retake the lead in the 78th minute as sophomore midfielder
Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) scored from about four yards out off an assist from freshman defender
Tavis Cameron (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) to give the Gorloks a 2-1 lead. The goal was the first of Kohler's collegiate career and it was also his first career game winning goal.
Freshman forward
Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) got into the scoring column with just 10 minutes left in the match as he took a pass from sophomore forward
Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) and connected from eight yards out to give the Gorloks a 3-1 lead. The goal by Gabriele was his first career collegiate goal and he is now one of 11 Gorloks to score at least one goal this season.
Kohler and junior midfielder
Joacquin Soto (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) each had three shots in the match, including Kohler putting two of those three shots on goal. In addition to Kohler and Soto, Gabriele, sophomore midfielder
Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood-Richmond Heights) and junior midfielder
Valentyn Trehub (Kiev, Ukraine/Webster Vienna) each had two shots in the win.
Joshua Rosendale led Olivet with four shots, all of which were put on goal. In fact, only four Comets recorded shots in Sunday's match.
Webster held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks and committed 12 fouls to 11 fouls for Olivet. The Comets, though, did pick up two yellow cards in the match.
Junior
Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) picked up the win in net for the Gorloks as he recorded four saves and allowed just one goal to improve to 3-1-0 on the year.
Andrew Aragon (3-3-1) took the loss in goal for the Comets as he allowed three goals and had five saves.
The Gorloks will look to make it five straight wins as they return home to World Wide Technology Soccer Park for an 8 p.m. match on Wednesday, Sept. 25 against Washington University in St. Louis, who received votes in last week's United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25 poll. It will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2017.
