JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Webster University Volleyball closed out play here Saturday afternoon at the MacMurray Quadrangle with a four-set St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Westminster (Mo.) College (14-25, 25-19, 25-23, 28-26)Â at Bill Wall Gymnasium on the MacMurray College campus.
With the win, Webster improves to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in SLIAC play, while Westminster falls to 6-6 and 4-1 in the league.Â
The win over Westminster helped the Gorloks finish the MacMurray Quadrangle with a 1-1 record as Webster suffered a five-set loss earlier in the day on Saturday to MacMurray.Â
Against Westminster, Webster's offense recorded 51 kills, hit .157 and had four aces, while the Blue Jays had 52 kills, hit .217 and recorded three aces.Â
Leading the way offensively for the Gorloks was freshman outside hitter
Lauren Borik (Belleville, Ill./Althoff), who had 14 kills, while junior outside hitter
Samantha Kruse (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) added 10 kills, seven digs and hit .219. In addition to Borik and Kruse, junior middle hitter
Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Carl Sandburg College) tallied nine kills and sophomore outside hitter
Peyton Eikel (Dardenne Prairie, Mo./Liberty) chipped in with seven kills.
Webster's defense finished with 105 digs, including a match-high 36 digs from junior libero
Kristen Farrah (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell), while senior setter
Jenna Rodriguez added 21 assists and 16 digs and freshman defensive specialist
Tori Cichelero (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline) posted a career high 11 digs in her first extensive action this season.
The Gorloks hit over .170 in the final three sets, including hitting over .200 in the second and fourth sets. In the second set, WU hit .204 with 15 kills and had 17 kills and hit .226 in the fourth set.Â
Westminster was paced offensively by Ashley Kistastis, who had 15 kills and hit .237, while Eryka Wanyonyi added 11 kills and hit .229.Â
On defense, the Blue Jays had 108 digs as three Westminster players recorded 20-plus digs in the match, led by Teresa Becker, who had 25 digs and added 31 assists. Erica Schrader had 24 digs and Wanyonyi added 23 digs in the loss.Â
The Gorloks will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 1 as they host Washington University in St. Louis for a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Grant Gymnasium.
