Baseball Collects 12 Hits in Setback Saturday at Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Webster University recorded 12 hits here Saturday in its second game of the 2020 season, but the No. 2 ranked Gorloks couldn't recover from a six run fifth inning by Rhodes College en route to suffering a 15-5 loss to the Lynx that was halted in the eighth due to the 10-run mercy rule at Stauffer Field. 

With the setback, Webster falls to 1-1 on the season, while Rhodes improves to 6-2 on the season. 

Against the Lynx, junior right fielder Adam Lovell (Lafayette, Ind./Saint Joseph's College) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot, while senior catcher Joe Swanson (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine West) and freshman leftfielder Landon Vahle (Lee's Summit, Mo./St. Michael Archangel) each had two hits and combined to score three runs. 

The Gorloks, who opened the season with an 8-3 win in 10 innings on Friday against Transylvania, opened the scoring in Saturday's game in the top of the first inning as Lovell led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt from junior shortstop Matt Staker (El Cajon, Calif./Saint Augustine) and scored when senior All-American third baseman Ben Swords (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) drove home Lovell on a ground out. 

Webster would push its lead to 3-0 in the top of the second as they had three hits, including RBI singles by both Vahle and Lovell. 

Rhodes, who earned a 1-0 win on Friday over 11th-ranked Coe College, got on the scoreboard in the third inning on a 2-run double from Wood Kimbrough off of senior hurler Copper Hake (Lincoln, Ill./IU-South Bend), who was making his Webster debut. 

The Lynx would score two more runs off of Hake in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI single by Willard Overstreet and a sacrfice fly off the bat of Peter York. 

Webster, though, would tie the game in the top of the fifth as Vahle reached on a lead-off single, stole second with two outs and after Staker walked, Swords delivered an RBI single up the middle that plated Vahle and tied the game at 4-all.

Rhodes would come back in the bottom of the fifth inning 11 hitters to the plate and recorded four hits and took advantage of an error by Swords at third base to plate six runs and take a 10-4 lead. 

The Gorloks would get one of those runs back in the seventh inning as Lovell and Staker reached thanks a single and double and Swords would bring home a run on a sacrifice fly to right that plated Lovell to bring Webster within 10-5. 

In the eighth inning, Rhodes took would tally five runs on five hits off of junior Andrew Padilla (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) and error by Swords to end the game. The big hit in the inning were a two-run single by Sam Roffwarg and a game ending double by Will Huertin. 

While Webster had 12 hits, Rhodes finished with 13 hits in the win as the top five hitters in their order combined to go 11-for-21 at the plate with six runs scored and nine RBI. Heurtin had three hits and 2 RBI, while York, Kimbrough, John McNair and Paul Giacomazzi each had two hits for the Lynx. Kimbrough finished with 4 RBI and two runs scored. 

Hake (0-1) took the loss for the Gorloks on the mound as he tossed 3.2 innings and allowed four hits and four run, while walking three and striking out three. 

On the day, Webster's six pitchers combined to walk six and strike out four and five of the six pitchers allowed a run, including Padilla allowing five in 2.1 innings of work. 

Trey Sledge (2-0) pitched the first five innings and allowed seven hits and four runs, while striking out five and walking one. 

Both teams each left seven runners on base in the game and each team turned a double play. 

The Gorloks also committed three errors, all of which, came from Swords. 

Webster will play its third game in three days on Sunday, Feb. 23 as they face 11tth/18th ranked Coe College at 9:30 a.m. at Stauffer Field.
