MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Webster University Softball concluded play here Sunday in the Maryville College Invitational by splitting its final two games of the four-game, two-day event hosted by Maryville College held at the MC Softball Complex.
The Gorloks opened the day on Sunday by recording 13 hits and scoring 10 runs in earning a 10-0 mercy-ruled win over Centre College, but falling 10-4 in Sunday's final game to Maryville College in six innings.
With the 1-1 record on Sunday, the Gorloks imporve to 1-3 on the year, while Centre fell to 1-2 and Maryville improved to 3-0 on the season.
Against Centre College on Sunday, Webster, who opened the season with a 4-1 setback to the Colonels on Saturday, scored at in four of the five innings, including tallying four runs in the fourth inning.
While its offense collected 13 hits, including three hits each by sophomore third baseman
Sheyla Iniguez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) and sophomore second baseman
Taylor Jackson (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin), the Gorloks got an outstanding pitching performance from sophomore
Arianna Arias (Pomona, Calif./Bishop Amat) in the circle as Arias tossed five shutout innings and allowed just three hits and struck one, while not issuing a walk.
The Gorloks jumped in front 3-0 in the top of the first inning as they recorded four hits in the inning with the big hit being a 2-run double off the bat of Jackson. Jackson's double brought home Iniguez and senior centerfielder
Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad), who had opened the game with a single a double respectively. The third run was driven home later in the inning on an RBI single by junior shortstop
Kirbie Mendenhall (Robinson, Ill./Parkland College).
Webster's lead grew to 4-0 in the second thanks to an RBI single by Jackson, which plated Iniguez, who had reached on an infield single earlier in the inning. In the inning, the Gorloks would leave the bases loaded.
In the third inning, Webster's lead grew to 6-0 thanks to an RBI double off the bat of senior
Avery Boccella (Gilbert, Ariz./Trinidad State), who was pinch hitting for senior catcher
Darian Morlan (Duchesne, Utah/Trinidad State) and an RBI single up the middle by Burroughs.
The Gorloks offense would then record three hits and take advantage of a Centre error and three wild pitches to score four runs and take a 10-0 lead in the fourth inning. The hits in the inning were an RBI single by Iniguez and singles by Jackson and freshman pinch hitter
Alexandria Cafolla (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood West).
In the bottom of the fourth, Centre put a runner on second base thanks to a two-out double by Sarah Aubuchon.
Webster would put two more runners on base in the top of the fifth thanks to a single by sophomore first baseman
Ashlee Seltzer (Castle Pines, Colo./Rock Canyon) and a walk issued to
Emma Steltzer (Manchester, Mo./University of New Mexico), but both runners would be stranded.
Arias would complete the shutout by retiring the final three Colonels in order to earn the Gorloks' first win of the season.
Meanwhile, in the second game against Maryville, the Gorloks offense had nine hits, but its defense struggled as they committed four errors that led to three unearned runs for the Scots.
Steltzer paced the Gorloks with two hits, both of which were doubles and scored two of Webster's four runs in the game.
The Gorloks scored the first run of the game in the top of the second as Steltzer doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored later in the inning on an RBI single to right off the bat of Iniguez.
Maryville, though, would record one hit and take advantage of two Gorlok errors to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead.
In the third, Jackson led off with a double and moved to third on a fly out and after junior rightfielder
Anna Muecke (Lueneburg, Germany/Spartanburg Methodist) walked to put runners on first and third, but Mendenhall would fly out to end the inning.
The Scots pushed its lead to 7-0 after three innings as they had three hits and Webster committed two errors in the bottom of the third.
Boccella brought the Gorloks within 7-2 on her one-out home run over the fence in left. The homer was the second of the season for Boccella.
Maryville, though, would get that run and three more in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-2 lead.
The Gorloks would respond by scoring two runs off of three hits and one error in the fifth to pull within 11-4. Steltzer got the scoring started on her RBI double down the left field line and two batters later, junior
Amanda Kraus (Valley Park, Mo./Valley Park) stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered another RBI double down the left field line.
In the sixth, the Scots would complete the scoring on an RBI double to center off the bat of Morgan Brewer to seal Maryville's win.
While Webster had nine hits, the Scots also finished with nine hits, including two hits and 2 RBI from Morgan, while Taylor Campbell added three RBI and scored two runs.
Cafolla (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Gorloks as she pitched three innings and allowed five hits and nine runs (six earned runs), while walking three and striking out two.
Hannah Bruce (2-0) picked up the win for the Scots as she pitched 1.2 innings and didn't allow a hit or a run and recorded one strikeout.
The Gorloks left nine runners on base and turned one double play in the loss.
Webster will now take about 14 days off before embarking on its six-day, 10-game spring break trip to Florida to compete in the PFX 2020 Spring Games. The Gorloks will open the trip on March 6 with games in Clermont, Fla., against Eastern University and St. Joseph's (Maine) at 1:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. CST respectively.
