CLERMONT, Fla. - Webster University returned to action following a day off on Sunday here Monday morning in the 2020 PFX Spring Softball Games and the Gorloks would split its two games on the day against Pitt-Greensburg and Bates College at Hancock Park.
The Gorloks, who are now 5-5 on the season, began Monday by posting a 10-2 win over Pitt-Greensburg that called in the bottom of the fifth due to the 8-run mercy rule, but the Gorloks were so fortunate in the second game as Bates picked up a 10-2 win in six innings over the Gorloks. With Monday's split, Webster is now 4-2 at this year's PFX Spring Games with four games remaining to be played.
On the day, Webster's offense produced 20 hits and scored 12 runs, but the Gorloks left a combined 13 runners on bases and committed six errors on defense that led to seven unearned runs, including committing four errros in the loss against Bates.Â
Five Gorloks recorded four hits apiece in the two games as sophomore designated player
Sheyla Iniguez (Riverside, Calif./Bloomington) went 3-for-6 with three runs scored an RBI, while sophomore first baseman
Ashlee Seltzer (Castle Pines, Colo./Rock Canyon) also went 3-for-6 with three runs and an RBI and sophomore leftfielder
Emma Steltzer (Manchester, Mo./Parkway South) also went 3-for-6 with two runs and 3 RBI. The other Gorlloks with three hits were freshman second baseman
Karissa Fredrickson (Foosland, Ill./Fisher) and freshman pitcher
Alexandria Cafolla (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood West).Â
In the win over Pitt-Greensburg (2-1), the Gorloks jumped in front 2-0 in the bottom of the first as they scored two without the benefit of a hit as the Bobcats committed two errors that to two unearned runs.Â
The Gorloks lead grew to 3-0 in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI single by Iniguez. Iniguez's single was one of four in the inning by the Gorloks, but Pitt-Greensburg wouldn't prevent any other runners to score after Iniguez's hit.Â
Webster would break the game open in the third as they sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored seven runs on six hits and a Bobcat error to take a 10-0 lead in the game. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run double off the bat of Steltzer, who now leads the team with five doubles this season.Â
That 10 run lead was more than enough for Cafolla, who earned the start in the circle. Cafolla retired the Bobcats in order in two of the five innings and pitched five innings in the win as she allowed four hits and two runs, while striking out two and walking one. The win improved Cafolla's record to 1-1 on the season.
Pitt-Greensburg would finally dent the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as they used three hits and a Gorlok error to score two runs, but Cafolla would end the game early by forcing Ashley Noel to ground out to end the game.Â
Against the Bobcats, Fredrickson and Cafolla, who were Webster's No. 8 and 9 hitters in the game, combined to go 4-for-6 at the plate with two runs scored. In addition, Iniguez and Steltzer each scored two runs and Steltzer added two RBIs. For the game, Webster got hits from eight different players.Â
The Bobcats had four players record one hit in the loss and they committed three errors.Â
Laila Smith (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Bobcats as she allowed 10 hits and 10 runs (seven earned runs), while walking two and striking out four.Â
Meanwhile, in the second game against Bates (3-1), the Gorloks offense outhit Bates, 10-8, but Webster's four pitchers combined to issue seven walks and record two wild pitches, including three walks in 1.2 innings from junior
Morgan Parrish (Lawrenceville, Ill./Parkland College), who earned the start in the circle.Â
The Gorloks opened the scoring in the second game by plating a run in the top of the first thanks to a lead-off single by Iniguez, a bunt and a ground ruled double off the bat of Seltzer to give Webster a 1-0 lead.Â
Bates, though, would get that run back in the bottom of the second without the benefit of a hit as in the inning, they drew three walks, stole two bases and took advantage of a Gorlok throwing error by senior catcher
Darian Morlan (Duchesne, Utah/Trinidad State).Â
In the third, Bates pushed its lead to 2-1 thanks to a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch and a fielder's choice off of senior
Breelyn Craig (Victorville, Calif./Trinidad State), who had relieved Parrish in the second inning.Â
Bates would add six more runs to its lead in the fourth inning as the Bobcats recorded four hits, but the Gorloks committed three errors that led to all six runs being unearned. The big hit in the inning for Bates was a two-run double from Julia Panepinto.Â
The Gorloks would move within six runs at 8-2 in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a double by Seltzer and an RBI single from Steltzer.Â
Bates would get that run back in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a walk, an infield single, a bunt and a ground out to push its lead to 9-2.Â
The Bobcats would end the game early in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a single, a ground rule double, a walk and a walk-off single to left from Caroline Bass.Â
Against Bates, Seltzer went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Iniguez was 2-for-4 and Steltzer and Fredrickson each had two hits in the loss.Â
Bass paced Bates with three hits, while Panepinto and Aleah Pagan each had two hits in the win and Janell Soto, Mary Collette and Panepinto each had 2 RBIs on the day.Â
Kirsten Pelletier (2-0) picked up the win in relief as she tossed 2.2 innings and allowed four hits and one runs, while striking out two and walking none. Bates' starting pitcher Payton Buxton pitched into the third inning and allowed six hits and one ru, while striking out five and walking none.Â
Craig (0-2) tool the loss for the Gorloks as she pitched 1.2 innings and allowed one hit and five runs (one earned run), while walking two and striking out one.Â
The Gorloks will continue play in the 2020 PFX Spring Games on Tuesday, March 10 with two more games at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex in Leesburg, Fla., against Swarthmore and Millikin University at 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. ET respectively.
