Gorloks Win Second Straight SLIAC Tournament Title

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University men's soccer team was back on the field when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles in the SLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament Final. The top seeded Gorloks were able to defeat the second seeded Golden Eagles in penalty kicks to win their second straight SLIAC Tournament Title and sixth in school history. With the loss, the Golden Eagles end their season with a 12-7-2 overall record.

The Gorloks and the Golden Eagles both finished the game with 14 shots apiece. Webster put eight of their shots on target while Spalding finished with seven. Spalding led the corner count as they finished with four compared to three from Webster.

The Gorloks got on the board first in this one as they were able to find the back of the net in the 27th minute of the game. Mark Moore had the goal for the Gorloks as Aamahn Murvin was able to flick the ball over the top of the Spalding defender right to Moore who volleyed it over the Golden Eagles keeper and into the back of the net for his 11th goal of the year.

Webster was back at it again in the 33rd minute of the half. Nick Thomas had the goal for the Gorloks as he was able to take a thru ball from Justin Kohler and slot it into the side netting for his first goal of the season to give Webster a 2-0 lead at the break.

Spalding came out in the second half and controlled the pace early. They put heavy pressure on the Gorloks defense and were able to find the back of the net in the 48th minute to cut the Websters lead to 2-1 in the game. They were able to tie the score with less then 10 minutes to play and the game entered overtime.

Neither side was able to take advantage of their chances through two overtime periods and the game entered penalty kicks.

Webster was able to defeat the Golden Eagles in penalties as Hunter Olaso, Mark Moore, Carlos Llamas, and Noah Abraham all converted their shots. Matt Coffey came up huge for Webster as he saved the first two penalties from Spalding.

Matt Coffey was in goal for Webster as he made five saves in the contest.

Following the conclusion of the contest, the SLIAC announced the All-Tournament Team. For their efforts over the last two games, Noah Thomas, Jonny McCarthy, and Tavis Cameron were all named to the all-tournament team while Hunter Olaso was named the 2021 SLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament MVP.

With the win, the Gorloks have earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. They will find out who they play on Monday, November 8th at 12:30 p.m. CT on www.NCAA.com.
