ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University women's soccer team was back on the pitch when they traveled across town to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins in the SLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament Final. The second seeded Gorloks were defeated by the top seeded Griffins by a final score of 3-0 to end their season with a 16-4-1 overall record. With the win, the Griffins will advance to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.
Gorloks had a tough time getting anything going in this one as they were held to just two shots in the game while putting one on target. The Griffins peppered the Gorloks for 26 total shots in the contest while putting 10 on frame. Fontbonne also led in the corner count as they finished with 18 compared to three from Webster.
After a scoreless first half, the Griffins broke into the scoring column early in the second. They took the lead in the 47
th minute of the game when Rylee Stafford found the back of the net for Fontbonne. The Griffins added to their lead late in the game as Molly Kovarik scored in the 72
nd minute and Kierstyn Weaver scored in the 89
th minute to solidify the win.
Mackenzie Sundhausen recorded the only shot on target for the Gorloks in the contest.
Hope Dedic had the other shot for Webster.
Taryn Banfield was in net for Webster as she finished with seven saves in the game.
Following the conclusion of tonight's game, the all-tournament team was announced. For their effort on the field,
Reaghan Young,
Isabella Dickneite, and
Mackenzie O'Neal were all recognized.
The Gorloks end their season with a 16-4-1 overall record and a 12-2-1 mark in conference play. They will resume play in the fall.
