Volleyball Posts Road Sweep Over Eureka, Moves to 2-1 on Season

EUREKA, Ill. - Webster University volleyball collected a three-set sweep here Wednesday evening over Eureka (25-15, 25-19, 25-15) in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena.

The Gorloks, who improved to 2-1 overall and in the SLIAC with the win, got a match-high 14 kills on .370 hitting from sophomore outside hitter Lauren Borik (Belleville, Ill./Althoff), who also added a career-high three aces and had nine digs in the win. Borik now leads the team with 28 kills this season. 

In addition to Borik, junior right side hitter Ali Spohr, who was just one kill shy of a triple-double last time out against Greenville, added seven kills, 19 assists, nine digs and hit .316, while freshman right side hitter Alexis Wolf (Quincy, Ill./Quincy) and junior outside/right side hitter Peyton Eikel (Dardenne Prairie, Mo./Liberty) each had five kills. 

As a team, Webster's offense hit a season high .288 as seven Gorloks hit over .300 on the night. Along with hitting a season-high .388, Webster also recorded season high in kills (45) and assists (43). Along with their 45 kills, the Gorloks tallied just 13 attack errors on 111 attacks. 

One area where Webster struggled on Wednesday was in its serving as the Gorloks had 12 service errors in the win. In fact, the Red Devils scored 25 of their 49 points on Gorlok attack and service errors. 

Webster's defense finished the night with 55 digs as junior libero Kyra Gensel (Clarkton, N.C./Harrells Christian) recorded a career-high 24 digs and held Eureka to an .022 attack percentage, including a -.031 percentage in the first set. The Gorloks also had one block and that block was a solo block from Borik in the second set. 

Emma Harris paced the Red Devils offense with five kills, while Regan Reed added four hits. Rori Dosemagen had 12 digs and Faith Catour recorded 11 assists for Eureka. 

The Gorloks will look to make its two straight wins this coming Friday, Feb. 26 as they return home to Grant Gymnasium to host Spalding University (2-2, 2-2 SLIAC) in a 7 p.m. match. Due to SLIAC rules, no fans will be permitted at indoor sporting events at any conference member institution this season.

Set 1: After watching Eureka score the first two points of the match and hold a 4-2 lead early in the first set, the Gorloks used a 15-3 scoring run to take a 17-7 lead. The run began with a kill by Borik and was capped by back-to-back kills from Borik. EC would respond by scoring eight of the next 10 points to drop WU's lead to 19-15. That would be as close as Eureka would get as Webster used a kill from Spohr to start a 6-0 run to close out the set and post the 25-15 win. Three of six Gorlok points came off of Eureka errors, while senior setter/right side hitter Emma Larson (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue West) capped the win with a kill. In the set, Webster had 12 kills and hit .206, while Eureka was limited to five kills and hit -.031 as they had six errors. 

Set 2: The second set was the most competitive of the night as it had four ties and one lead change. After Eureka scored the first point of the set, the Gorloks used a 5-1 run to take a 5-2 lead. Eureka, though, would score five of the next seven points to tie the set at 7. After the teams traded points to tie the set at 8-all, the Gorloks used a 10-3 scoring run to push its lead to 18-11. The run began with a service ace from sophomore outside/middle hitter Jordan Mueller (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and was capped by back-to-back kills from Borik and Spohr. The Red Devils wouldn't go away as they responded by scoring six of the next nine points to pull within 21-17. Webster would then rebound to score four of the set's final six points to seal its 25-19 win and take a 2-0 lead in the match. In the set, Webster had 16 kills and hit .350, while Eureka hit .083 with five kills. 

Set 3: Unlike the first two sets, Webster scored the first two points in the third set, Eureka would score six of the next 10 points to tie the set at 6-all. Following EC's run, the Gorloks responded with a 10-3 run to take a 16-9 lead. Wolf and Borik each had two kills during the run. The Red Devils once again would rally as they used a 5-3 scoring run to cut Webster's lead to 19-14. That would be as close as the final set would get as the Gorloks scored six of the final seven points, including capping the 25-15 set win with a kill by Eikel. Webster hit .278 with 16 kills in the set, while Eureka hit .000 with four kills and four errors.
