MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - Behind a fifth straight double-double of 17 kills and 20 digs from sophomore outside hitter
Lauren Borik (Belleville, Ill./Althoff), 14th-ranked Webster University volleyball extended its win streak to six consecutive victories after its four-set win (27-29, 25-18, 25-20, 25-16) here Saturday in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Ruble Arena against Iowa Wesleyan University.
With the victory, Webster improves to 10-2 overall and 10-2 in the SLIAC, while Iowa Wesleyan fell to 1-12 overall and 1-12 in the league.
In addition to her 17 kills and 20 digs, Borik added two blocks, three aces and hit .265 on 49 swings and four errors. Along with Borik's double-double, junior outside/right side hitter
Peyton Eikel (Dardenne Prairie, Mo./Liberty) added 10 kills and hit .269, while freshman right side hitter
Alexis Wolf (Quincy, Ill./Quincy) tallied eight kills and added three blocks.
For the match, Webster recorded 52 kills, but hit just .165 as they committed 21 attack errors on season-high 188 attempts.
Webster finished the match with as 10-7 edge in service aces as Borik and freshman setter
Delaney Demman (Omaha, Neb./Central) each had three, while junior rsetter/right side hitter
Ali Spohr (Quincy, Ill./Quincy) added two in her first match in 13 days.
Spohr, who hadn't played since suffering an injury against Westminster on March 7, also added 14 assists and three digs in three sets. Along with Spohr, Demman had a career-high 23 asssits and added eight digs and sophomore setter/right side hitter
Mary Nelson (St. Louis, Mo./Bishop DuBourg) had nine assists, two kills and four digs.
Webster's defense also collected a season-high 86 digs as besides Borik's 20 digs, junior libero
Kyra Gensel (Clarkton, N.C./Harrells Christian) tied a career high with 24 digs and sophomore defensive specialist
Tori Cichelero (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline) had 18 digs in the win.
The Gorloks held the Tigers to an .066 attack percentage and outblocked the home team, 7-2 in winning its 17th consecutive match against Iowa Wesleyan.
Lezar'Rhea Burnside paced IWU with 13 kills and hit .286, while Emily Gehring and Skylar Garcille each had seven kills. Jenna Murphy was one of four Tigers with double-digit digs as she had a match-high 26 and Lindsay Fernandez recorded a double-double of 16 assists and 10 digs.
Webster will return to action this coming Wednesday, March 24 as the Gorloks close the 2020-21 regular season with a 7 p.m. match at 19th-ranked Westminster (10-2 overall, 10-2 SLIAC) in Fulton, Mo. The winner of the match will share the regular season SLIAC title with Greenville, who has already clinched at least a share of the regular season title and earn a Top 2 seed in the SLIAC Tournament.
Set 1: The first set might of been the set of the season for both teams as it featured 11 ties and three lead changes. In the set, Webster jumped in front 6-1 and led 10-7 when the Tigers used an 8-5 run to tie the set at 15. The set would then be tied against at 16-16, 17-17, 18-18 and 19-19 before IWU scored two straight points to take a 21-19 lead. Kills by Eikel and Wolf retied the set at 21, but IWU would then score two straight points to tie things at 23. The set would then be tied again at 24, 25, 26 and 27, before the Tigers used a kill by DaMate Maileokekai and block by both Burnside and Fernandez to seal its 29-27 set win. In the set, both teams hit .140 as Webster had 17 kills, including six from Borik and IWU had 14 kills.
Set 2: The Tigers would take the momentum from the win in the first set and jump in front 7-4 in the second set. After the Gorloks scored two straight points to pull within 7-6, IWU used a 7-3 run to push its lead to 14-9 following an ace by Murphy. Webster, though, would respond by using a 10-2 run that was keyed by back-to-back aces from Borik to take a 19-16 lead. After a service error by Gensel stopped WU's run, the Gorloks would close the set by scoring six of the final seven points, including capping the 25-18 win with back-to-back kills from Borik. In the set, WU hit .244 as Eikel and Borik combined for eight of their 13 kills, while IWU hit .022.
Set 3: After an early 2-2 tie in the third set, the Gorloks used a 7-2 scoring run capped by a Borik ace to push out to a 9-4 lead. The Tigers would cut the lead to 12-10 after kills from both Burnside and Garcille, Webster would use a 5-2 run to push its lead to 17-12. IWU wasn't done, though, as they responded to WU's run with a 6-2 run of their own to take a 20-19 lead. Junior middle hitter
Kylie Burke (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) put down a kill to tie the set at 20 and that kill ignited a 5-0 run for the Gorloks to close the set and post a 25-20 win and take a 2-1 lead in the match. In the set, neither team was efficient as Webster hit .044 and IWU hit .100.
Set 4: Webster jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth set, but the Tigers would come back with a 7-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. The Gorloks would respond with a 5-2 run capped by a Borik kill to tie the set at 9-all. After Burnside put down a kill to give the Tigers a 10-9 lead, the Gorloks used a 12-2 run that was aided by eight Tiger errors to take a 21-12 lead. Folllowing a set error by Gensel that brought IWU within 21-13, the Gorloks closed the set by scoring four of the final seven points, including capping the 25-16 set win on a kill by Borik to finish off the match. Webster stifled Iowa Wesleyan to an -.093 hitting percentage in the final set. The Gorloks hit .205 as a team.
