DECATUR, Ill. - The Webster women's tennis team concluded its two match trip to Illinois here Saturday as the Gorloks fell 7-2 to Millikin University at the Fairview Tennis Complex.
Saturday's match was about 14 hours after the Gorloks posted a 9-0 shutout win in Jacksonville, Ill., against Illinois College.
With Saturday's setback, Webster falls to 2-4 on the season, while Millikin improves to 6-2.
Both of Webster's wins on Saturday came in doubles as Webster's No. 1 team of sophomore
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and senior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) picked an 8-7 (7-5) win over Millikin's No. 1 duo of Brianna Barconi and Cristina Borunda. Brezovar and Federhofer improved to 5-1 on the season and the duo have now won four straight doubles matches.
The Gorloks other win came in No. 2 doubles as sophomore
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) and junior
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) posted its third straight win as they earned an 8-5 win over Millikin's Shelby Jones and Destiny Galvan.
Millikin would win its first point of the match at No. 3 doubles as they posted an 8-2 win over Webster's No. 3 team of sophomore
Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and freshman
Bailey Higgins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City).
In singles play, the Big Blue would sweep all six of the matches to earn the match victory.
Millikin would open singles play with wins at No. 6 and No. 4 to tie the match at 3-all.
With the match tied, Millikin's Nikol Obradovic would battle Brezovar at the No. 1 spot as she won 6-1 in the first set and then won 7-5 in the second set to give Millikin a 4-3 lead in the match.
Galvan would seal Millikin's win as she defeated Higgins, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to give the Big Blue the five points needed for the victory.
The other two singles matches were not fully completed by Millikin won both of those as Serbentas fell 7-6, 2-1 to Borunda at No. 2 singles and Federhofer played perhaps the match of the day at No. 3 singles as she earned a 6-3 win in the first set over Taylor Milholland, before Milholland won 6-0 in the second set and was leading 4-3 in the third set when Millikin sealed its win.
Webster is scheduled to return to court on Sunday, March 28 as they face Kaskaskia for an exhibition match at Kaskaskia College.
