WEBSTER GROVES - The Webster women's tennis team opened the home portion of its 2021 schedule here Thursday evening by suffering a 9-0 defeat at the hands of NCAA Division II Maryville University at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.
With the setback, Webster, who has now played two Division II teams to open the season, falls to 0-2 overall, while Maryville improved to 3-0.Â
Thursday's match began with doubles play as the Saints opened by winning all three of the matches in doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match.Â
In doubles, the Gorloks were only able to win three games as sophomore
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) paired up with senior
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) to fall 8-2 to Maryville's tandem of Emily Orlove and Carolina Velazquez.Â
Webster other game in doubles came at No. 3 doubles as junior
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) and sophomore
Katarina Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) fell 8-1 to Ashely Dowden and Maria Gouveia.Â
Maryville won win 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.Â
Following the conclusion of the three doubles matches, the two teams turned to singles action and in singles, the Gorloks were able to win a total of seven games across the six singles matches.Â
Federhofer would win two of those seven games at No. 2 singles as she fell 6-1, 6-1 to Georgie Cupper.
The other games won by the Gorloks came at No. 1 singles as Brezovar won a game in the second set and she fell 6-0, 6-1 to Maria Paula Suarez, while Serbentas won a game in the first set of her 6-1, 6-0 setback to No. 3 singles to Orlove.Â
Ferguson won a game in the second set against Velazquez at No. 4 singles in her 6-0, 6-1 win and the other games were won at No. 5 singles by freshman
Bailey Higgins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson) as she fell 6-1, 6-0 to Dowden and sophomore
Emily Casey (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) also won a game in the first set of her 6-1, 6-0 loss at No. 6 singles to Gouveia.
The Gorloks will return to action on Saturday, March 13 with a 12:30 p.m. home match against Evangel University,Â
