INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Webster University volleyball team concluded its 2020-21 spring season here Saturday by going 1-1 and winning the consolation match of the Bronze Bracket of the American Volleyball Coaches NCAA Division III National Invitational Tournament held at The Academy Volleyball Club.
Unlike Friday's pool play matches that were as exhibition matches as they were played as best of three sets, Saturday's matches were played as a traditional five set match and the matches counted in the team's season record, plus the statistics also counted for each team.
The Gorloks, who earned 12 votes in this week's latest AVCA Division III Coaches Poll, opened Bronze Bracket play on Saturday with a four-set loss to Concordia-Wisconsin (12-25, 25-10, 15-25, 11-25), before concluding the two-day event with a four-set win over Covenant College in the consolation match of the Bronze Bracket.
With the 1-1 record on Saturday, Webster completes the COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 season with a 12-5 overall record.
Against Concordia (Wis.), who earned 10 points in this week's AVCA Division III Coaches Poll, Webster recorded 23 kills and hit .112 as freshman right side hitter
Alexis Wolf (Quincy, Ill./Quincy) had nine kills and hit .250 to pace the Gorloks. No other Gorlok had more than four kills in the match.
Webster's defense recorded 62 digs as junior libero
Kyra Gensel (Clarkton, N.C./Harrells Christian) had 15 digs and sophomore defensive specialist
Tori Cichelero (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline) added 10 digs. The Gorloks also had six total blocks, including five assisted blocks by junior middle hitter
Kylie Burke (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West), while sophomore outside hitter
Lauren Borik (Belleville, Ill./Althoff) had three blocks and added nine digs.
Concordia (8-3) finished with 54 kills, but recorded 16 service aces in the win. Jenna Chaussee paced CUW with 14 kills, 16 digs and six aces and hit .393, while Sophia Collins added 13 kills, nine digs and hit .345.
CUW also had 9.5 total team blocks and recorded 68 digs in the win.
In the consolation match against the Scots, who are member of the USA South Conference, Webster hit .206 as a team as they had 58 kills, including 18 kills and 22 digs from Borik. The double-double was the eighth of the season for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year. In addition to Borik, Wolf added 16 kills and hit .394.
Burke (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) added seven kills and hit .583 in her final collegiate match as she will graduate in May after three years at Webster, while junior middle hitter
Peyton Eikel (Dardenne Prairie, Mo./Liberty) had six kills and nine digs.
The Gorloks also finished with 93 digs as Gensel had 26 digs, while Cichelero added 13 digs in the win.
Sophomore setter/right side hitter
Mary Nelson (St. Louis, Mo./Bishop DuBourg) had a career day setting the ball as she finished with 28 assists and added eight digs and four aces as the Gorloks finished eight aces in the win. Junior setter/right side hitter
Ali Spohr (Quincy, Ill./Quincy) had 17 assists, two kills, and six digs for the Gorloks.
Covenant (9-8) was led by 11 kills with Alexa Spurling, while Reagan Keener added nine kills and Summer Johnson had eight kills. Rachel Bartlett had 32 assists and seven kills, with Meriel Chupp adding six kills in the loss.
