Men's Soccer Moves Closer to Regular Season SLIAC Title, Posts 4-1 Win at Westminster

Win at Home Saturday Against Eureka Gives Gorloks Regular Season League Title

FULTON, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team scored two goals in each half here Wednesday evening to down Westminster College 4-1 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Westminster Field.

Wednesday's win improved to Gorloks to 8-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the league, while Westminster fell to 5-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the SLIAC.

With the win, Webster moves another step closer to taking its home the SLIAC regular season title for the first time since winning three consecutive regular season titles from 2012-14 as is all the Gorloks need to do is pick up a win in Saturday's regular season finale at home against Eureka. The winner of the league title will earn the No. 1 seed in the SLIAC Tournament and will earn the right to play all their tournament matches at home. 

Three different Gorloks scored goals in the match as they recorded eight shots on goal in the win, including four shots on goal in each period. 

Webster's first goal came late in the 12th minute as they scored their own goal to give Webster a 1-0 lead. 

About seven minutes later, junior midfielder Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) gave the Gorloks a 2-0 lead as he scored on a penalty kick. 

Westminster got into the scoring column just four seconds into the 37th minute as Bukuru Dieudone scored his second goal of the season as he took passes from Matthew Schulte and Kendall Schrader. 

Sophomore forward Jarret Gabriele (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) scored a goal less than two minutes into the second half as he took a pass from junior forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) for his fourth goal of the season. Gabriele's goal gave the Gorloks a 3-1 lead. 

Junior defender Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) got into the scoring late in the 88th minute as he took a pass from freshman midfielder Carlos Llamas (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and found the net for his first goal this season and the third goal of his collegiate career. 

Gabriele paced the Gorloks with three shots and two shots on goal, while Haugen and Murvin each had two shots and Haugen added two shots on goal. 

Westminster would outshoot the Gorloks, 16-10, including a 10-4 edge in shots in the first half. 

Five Blue Jays would record two shots in the loss. 

The Gorloks held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks and the Gorloks committed 14 fouls to Westminster's 12 fouls. Westminster, though, had three yellow cards in the match. 

Senior goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) picked up the win in net as he improved to 4-1 on the season as he allowed one goal and made seven saves. 

Chase Vogt (4-3-1) took the loss in net for the Blue Jays as he allowed four goals and had five saves. 

The Gorloks will look to close out the 2020-21 regular season with another win as they host Eureka for a 3:30 p.m. Senior Day match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo. Prior to Saturday's match, the Gorloks will recognize its five graduating seniors in a prematch ceremony. This year's seniors are Amick. forward/midfielder Matt Ceriotti (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH), defender Dylan Jannin (Perryville, Mo./Perryville), defender Cameron Killian (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) and midfielder Logan Takizawa (Holualoa, Hawaii/Konawaena).
