OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - Playing its fourth consecutive road match of the season here Sunday afternoon, Webster University women's tennis picked up a 4-3 win over Oakland City University in a non-conference match at the OCU Outdoor Courts.
With the win, Webster improves to 8-5 on the season and has now won six of its last seven matches with the loss coming on Saturday at McKendree, while Oakland City falls to 5-8 on the year.
Much like Saturday's match at McKendree, Sunday's match was played with similar rules as the three doubles matches counted as one point with a team needing to win two of three doubles matches to earn the point.
In Sunday's match, the Gorloks began the match by winning two of the three in doubles to earn the doubles point.
Webster's first win in the match came at the No. 1 doubles spot as sophomore
Erin Brezovar (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and freshman
Bailey Higgins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) partnered up for the first time this season and picked up a 6-0 win over OCU's Kataryna Kulynvch and Pamela Barbosa.
The Gorloks other win in doubles came at the No. 2 spot as junior
Emma Ferguson (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) and sophomore Katarine Serbentas (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County) picked up a 7-5 win over Kaleigh Horn and Hannah Wilson. Ferguson and Serbentas improved to 8-3 on the season in doubles.
OCU, though, would earn a win at No. 3 doubles as Audrey Wilson and Maizy Gilliland earned a 6-0 win over junior
Navone Armstrong (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer North) and sophomore
Emily Casey (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) to prevent a Webster sweep.
Leading 1-0 in the match, Webster turned its attention to singles play and in singles, the Gorloks would win at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 to seal its 4-3 match victory.
The Gorloks got its second point in the match at No. 1 singles as Brezovar won her sixth straight match and improved her record to 8-4 following her 6-2, 6-0 win over Kulynvch.
Higgins would give the Gorloks a 3-0 lead in the match following her win at No. 3 singles as she defeated Horn in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Higgins, like Brezovar, is now 8-4 on the season in singles play.
Oakland City would win singles matches at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6, with the No. 2 and No. 6 matches being decided in a tie-breaker in the third set.
Casey would give the Gorloks the needed fourth point to pick up the match win as she defeated Wilson, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Casey is now 4-3 on the season in singles.
The Gorloks will next be in action on Wednesday, April 21 as they conclude the 2021 regular season season with a 4:30 p.m. non-conference match at Washington University in St. Louis.
